Will a Fox RP3 work on my 97 Beast?
« on: August 07, 2012, 02:45:51 pm »
Anybody know?  I'm thinking of updating my Beast with the Fox RP3 and Fox 100RLC I have laying around from my Rocky Mountain ETSX-70 that cracked (again! had it welded once).

Also, is anybody willing to sell a cone adaptor to make that RP3 work?  I think I've read most of the threads were you all have designed one.  Lots of brilliant work!

Also, do you think this is a worthwile project or should I keep it stock?  Everything works right now, but I thought this would make the bike more useful to me even though it's not my primary rider anymore.

Thanks,

Matt

You are welcome to borrow my cone adaptor and have one made. I am just down the road in Georgia.

Thanks for that offer.  That's very generous!  I don't have experience working with machine shops...think they need a CNC machine to duplicate it?  Wonder about how much they'd charge to do just one?

Being frugal, I'm tempted to try the JB Weld route Willem took on on this thread: http://idriders.com/proflex/smf/index.php?topic=2599.msg17417#msg17417 although I guess that will make that RP3 worth a lot less on eBay if I don't like it.  Another idea I had: saw this at the local Harbor Freight Tools for $8 http://hfreviews.com/item.php?id=5467.  It's stainless steel.  Maybe I can cut/grind it into the right shape and tap the right size hole in the bottom.  It's claimed to have a 1700 lb working load when attached to a 4mm cable.

Well, I just test fit the F100RLC fork.  I only have 21mm of steerer tube showing above the headset.  That's a little short unless I go with this stem: http://spank-ind.com/index.php?a=info&do=pro&id=33&tid=1 .  I'll stalk one on eBay for awhile...it's a bit pricey.  I also thought about this steerer tube extender: http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/cntry-us/bbb-aheadstem-steerer-item55664.html  Anyone use one?  This is the first I've seen one.  I wonder if it's safe.

Still haven't committed to this project.  If I decide to do this, I may paint my Fox Fork red or at least black.

Hi there

If short on steerer length think head set stack heights

(measure from lowest part ie crown bearing to where lower bearing meets frame steerer tube and then add from top of frame steerer to pre load point on upper part of head set )

they can vary quiet a bit it's a good way to gain a few  mm
Most good makes stack height can be found online I would recommend cane creek S3 good value not to heavy rebuildable low stack height but there are a few others a bit lower
Start researching

Wouldn't Go less than 3mm below top of stems horizontal tube at most

Thanks for the idea Pete, but I don't think I'd gain enough steerer tube with a different headset so that I'd be able to use a regular 40mm stack height stem.  My current headset stack is 24 mm...that's actually fairly short already.

But that spike stem should work well if I decide to go that route.  Even though it's got only one bolt, it's actually rated for downhill and freeride.  Just pricey and means I have to buy a 31.8 handlebar too.

no they don't i had 3 adapters made up by a man with mill and lathe for 856 family; the cone is the hardest part to make as it needs to be precise else the adapter will flop about.  BTW the adapter was for fox float 165 mm shock - this one just about fits in the frame the right way up; a SID shock will not fit - not need to ask how I know that.   search for my posts on here about this to get some idea of what the adapter should look like.  i have scan of the dimensioned drawing should you require it.  you also need to make two bushes for the top eyelet and one for the lower eyelet.
