Hi there folks
About a month a go I decided that my 1994 Proflex 754 (that I have owned since 2000) was getting a bit difficult to get spares for ie elastomers it was also a medium size frame approx 16" not ideal as I am 6ft 2" so a bit hunched up and massive seat post (I am also getting a bit older) couldn't alter stem on front Girvin 1 as it was fixed to the shock mount,
she was nice ride with lots of interest from other cyclists.

so after some research a decision was made to keep the faith but look for something a bit newer and larger.

So after some searching I sourced from the bay a 1997 857 expert series large size frame and rear triangle complete with NR2 rear shock
all seems in good condition for £70

I also bought at the same time a small framed 13" Gary Fisher bike that has donated for its groupset wheels and Manitou forks to the cause

857 spec now

1997 857 expert series large size frame (red)
with carbon fibre rear swinging arm and NR2 shock
2004 Manitou Axel elite (100mm travel) forks
2004 LX Deore mechs and shifters Mega 9
2004 Deore disc hubs 32hole no discs fitted at moment Mega 9 34/11 cassette
1997 Avid 1.9 levers and 2.0 V brakes (EX specialized FSR)
2004 Bontrager select crankset 170mm
2010 ISIS bottom bracket
2010 Cane creek S3 headset
1997 Specialized team control 2.0 tyre front/ Specialized team master 1.9 rear
2004 Bontrager 60mm 10+/- stem
2004 Bontrager riser bars
1992 Control tech seat post
1991 titanium flite saddle

Okay that's the bike introduced
I used ride more in the early nineties but got married kids the usual stuff to stop the big bike spends but am getting back into things and have been wanting to get back up to speed with MTBing whilst still enjoying the RETRO look
looking for more info on rear shock updates rear disc mounts (cant see drawings on this site) and have found both retro bike and IDriders a good source of info.

Welcome Pete97857 ,

Nice to see another proflex spring back to life.

Quite a few people have mounted disc tabs to their carbon swingarms. Same with shocks.

Somewhere hiden in the archives is a drawing for a disc mount. One gent even welded one to his carbon swingarm(Simon).

There is also greasing and parts info available, so ask away.

Got the camera just a bit of a ludite when it comes to uploading photos,
will try again tomorrow didn't want to waste to sunshine so took the bike for a 2hour test ride along local cliff paths overlooking the sunny northsea Allen keys spanners screwdriver etc etc in backpack.

As you may have guessed brakes and steering worked well,still need to fiddle with riding position need 100+mm stem+10 and think that solid cable runs to rear brakes and rear mech is the way to go this will also fill the large cable mounts that came without spacer ferrules currently using bmx bike brake adjusters as intended to get spacers made up in alloy.

Back to rain again today that's Aberdeen folks

Comgratulations on the new/old ride!

The 857 is still a pretty lightweight and capable bike, even for a "Retro" bike. Sounds like you have a decent enough setup already, but as you already have disc hubs then maybe fitting disc tabs is the next logical step forward? It's certainly the way I intend to go as even the Maguras are just not the same as a well sorted hydraulic disc setup.

Who uses Schrader anymore? All my tubes are Presta.

Maybe the 23t was her low gear, and she's so elite now that she doesn't need it for riding?

the clue is in the little bit of writing you can see on the dress just below, well,

anyway, you can see it says Kenda 28 x 1 3/8 (I think). Roadie surely.

Hi guys sorry to be offline and unable to post pics of my proflex 857 but the day after taking photos and getting them up loaded I was involved in a sixty foot fall leaving me badly injured both feet smashed lots of bone damage to legs broken pelvis spinal fracture two broken wrists one smashed elbow and some broken ribs,
Good news folks I wasn't on my bike at the time of accident now after 6 months in hospital slowly getting better and now having Internet access (some hospital equipment affected by signals) here is the photos.
I will keep surfing for more information about the super proflex brand and try to spread the word should be back in the saddle in about one year.

Ouch!!! Yes, my first thought was.... "How is the bike?" During my years as a roadie-racer and mtb'er and EMT-fire medic the first words were always, "How is my bike..." though spleen was hanging out the nostril and feet didn't point in the same direction, the foremost worry was the machine.

I expect that had the bike been involved, you would have gotten much more air from which to plummet earthwards.

Wow, that is an impressive bunch of trauma! I won't soon be comparing scars with the likes of you. Not riding for that period of time will surely suck. I hope that your recovery can remain interesting and therapy brings a full recovery of your physical aspects.
