Advice needed on Fitting Hydraulic Hoses to an Oz/5500
« on: November 19, 2009, 01:08:39 am »
Hi All,
I'm finally getting around to rebuilding my Oz's, at least one of them will be rear disc (I have fitted a Hammerhead) using Hydraulic Avid Juicy 7 Carbons.
The cable housing stops on the LHS of the down tube are obviously intended to be used with a cable brake and so are not "through" for the cable housing.
I'm thinking of drilling/filing out the internal diameter of these to allow the hydraulic hose to run straight through.

Anyone got any experience of doing this?

or alternatives?

I'd prefer to remove them by drilling out the rivets and working on them off of the bike, but then the internal parts of the pop rivets would fall inside the frame and I can't see any aperture to let them fall out of, in fact I already have a few loose items in there that move about as I upend the frame............so maybe 4 more won't matter...........

Any thoughts?

I did this whilst it was on the swinger but I used a long drill bit then a round file and the hose fitted just fine

My OZx came with small hydraulic hose adapter clips that screw through the existing cable clips on the down tube. Very neat and you dont have to loose the original cable fitment. I'll try to get a photo this weekend.

have you thought about threading the hose through then reattaching the caliper with new olives and fittings then bleeding them?

several manufacturers sell units similar these, this is shimanos version -
i tweaked mine a bit and painted them - can't remember the brand tho'

'hydraulic line guides' screw fit in the existing cable stops on frames and run the cables right along side

That's exactly what I was going to do, but the cable stops are only big enough on one of their sides but narrow down to just let the brake cable through on their other side. You know, the cable stops on the LHS of the frame down tube where you have a straight bit of exposed brake cable between the cable shrouded bendy bits!

But, if I use Chris or OP's ideas of "extra bits" then I don't need to mod the frame or mucking about with the hoses.

P.s. Has anyone had to cut and re-terminate a hydraulic hose? How easy is it? Any specialist tools needed? and what bleeding kit or DIY did you use?

No need for me to post a pic as OP's says it all. Only difference is mine are billet alli. I think they are by either Hope or Magura. They work a treat and leave you the option to go back to V's if you should ever decide to.

This info is great. I hadn't thought about this issue but would have found my self in the same position by the end of the year.

Do you guys know if the ones made by hope or magura come in colour choices?

As a side note I think I accidently reported this post to moderators. Sorry, fat fingers on a phone keyboard.

Thanks OP, a pair of these are on their way from ChainReaction UK, as we speak.
Plus 2 sets of Avid BB7's at 10% discount this weekend , one for "Mrs OZ" and one for the Road Warrior XP-X with 700C Disk wheels care of JeffHop!

I'm still tempted to drill them out though................<GRIN>

I had thought about drilling mine out for full cable runs also. Please follow-up on this about how well it works.

Keep the cable guides tight!  I had two.   Lost one on a ride.  Should have used loctite on it.

The ones Ive got on my OZx are from Magura. I dont think they are listed in different colours. They look quite trick in bare aluminium finish though. They are listed in the 2010 HS33 accessories section.

here's what i did on this one -
filed the ends of the guides flat so the cable guide will sit flush against it -
can't remember if i drilled the guides it out or just ran the bolt thru - probably drilled
put a washer on the end - never had a problem with it -
use black electricians tape to protect the frame otherwise it'll wear with movement.

was better than alternatives - have some fun and be creative - that's what this is all about.
