The rear facing bottle mount lugs are just another development and show that the frame is one of the last ones made. That frame looks to be just about the same spec as the 1997 spec frames used for the 97 Beast GDT and the 657, these are later frames than the X series frames but as already pointed out they don't have the uninterrupted seat tube that only seemed to appear on the X series frames.By the way I’m 5ft 11 and always found the medium frame to be quite roomy.

I just picked up an 856 in medium (brand spanking new) and it has an uninterrupted seat tube (as in no canti brake hole in the tube). Also seems interesting that the seat tube measurement doesn't change between the large and the medium. As least its the same on my Large 955 and medium 856. Only the top tube seems to be any different.
Here is a picture of the 856 I have just gotten my hands onto.
