woooooooooooow crazy

Just makes me wonder what these bikes are really worth??? i know mine cost me at least 1300 to build would be good to get a genuine Idea of their worth, after all a 10 year old frame! but how many people can say they still have a bike 10 years on, carbon at that still sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet as ever.

recent ly considered a cannondale carbon rush but I just cant give up my 5500c

I know whatcha mean...my 4000 was $400, but since then I've dropped a bit into it upgrading the drive train to XTR M950/M952 and adding Magura HS33's. Still the XTR parts were mostly used and a fraction of their original cost on eBay. If I upgrade to Risses it's safe to say that I'll be holding onto it for a while. Was a bike shop last night checking out other FS MTBs, but can't believe they can go for upwards of $4K - $5K :-O

It gets worse - I've looked again - It looks like my mother painted it in magnoli - what a travesty - a Beast should be  biting your ankles not looking like my  mothers designer

The white powdercoated frame in the second RetroBike link is nice...but from what I know about powdercoating alloy it's a bit of a no-no. First (personal experience), if the Ph.D. candidate running the over turns up the heat too high you'll get serious warping/melting. I saw this happen with a set of Magura clutch/brake perches for my old BMW motorcycle - ruined. They're way thicker than anything on a Proflex. Also happened to a set of alloy shock shrouds from the same motorcycle, but in this case I was able to push out some of the warping so they looked reasonably straight.

Second, there is some weakening of the metal that can occur when heating the metal...it's not called Hall Effect, 'cuz that's the one about magnets...but it's one of the "Effects". Anyway, here are a few links I found...

I would not worry about the heat overageing or annealing the base metal, as the paint is typicaly compramised if painted beyond normal operating ranges. 6061 frames will only age harden a slight amount, and 7005 will not even be measurable. Any overheating will blister the paint, and underheating will not let the paint cure enough. My finding is that any painter that has survived more than 5 years knows how to do it right. The screaming they would endure if they did not would not be fun. ;D

The effect you are looking for is called heat affect zone or "HAZ". That is the metal side adjacent to the weld. The weld zone itself goes through a very fast and violent heat cycle, subdoed with the correct filler rod chemistry(altered alloys that work with the base metal to form a desirable alloy in the molten pool). The base metal not melted and next to the weld goes into some transition during heating and cooling.Usually this HAZ looses some hardness when heated, but can age up during cooling to some extent. Then father time takes over. :'(

Most if not all asians use 7005 to make bike frames. The welding does not soften or anneal the metal significantly, and the powdercoat cycle is all the post weld stress relieve they give it. The 7005 frames then sit in the factory and shipping container for a couple more months allowing some more stress relief(I call shaking out from my steel days).

My 2 cents. I hate paint. >:(

Those are neat links, one nerd to another! :o

done. It's called Reader's bikes. We'll not make it sticky until it proves to be a goer, if well used it'll naturally rise to the top, if it bombs, it'll slowly fall down the pile...

New Carbon swingarm for x57, 1000, 2000, 3000, with cable hanger.

I bought a 2000 off this guy.  He was a great help with the UPS insurance when UPS lost half the package.
