Maintance stand
« on: June 07, 2004, 04:35:42 am »
Just after some recommendations and why for suitable maintance stand for a carbon frame,as I do a lot of maintance to not only mine and my son's bike but others too,my current stand though good is not suitable for some of the more involved jobs,
I want something that will hold it very secure but have yet to find one I think is suitable for the carbon frame,
I don't really want one that clamps to the seat post as mine is a carbon ct2 post plus I've had the problem in the past of the seat post insert breaking,
So maybe I'm looking for one with jaws large enough to go around the O/S top tube? or one that clamps in two places?
what are others out there using,
cost is an issue must be a reasonable price,
thanks in advance
Simon.

My wife says I don't know how to do cheap!!!! [smiley=laughing.gif]
good idea  [smiley=beer.gif]but that means I've got to purchase a new stand and buy or acquire a suitable seat post and I still worry about the insert, probabaly unfounded but still a concern, good option though.

Sometimes I put my bike on my trainer to work on.  I can generally put more leverage on the bike because the trainer doesn't bend and it is secured at the dropouts which is probably one of the stronger areas of the bike.

finde a pipe at the hardware store. Or since you claim you buy big or don't buy at all. Buy the most expensive stand of all. make sure it has a soft rubbery clamp mechanism. I've seen many of them but don't recal what they are called.

Hey Simon.  I use chains myself.  It puts much less stress on the bike.

A local shop (a couple of guys run out of their house) that I was at just recieved this new, really slick workstand.  It clamps the bike at the dropouts.  It was VERY expensive, but it may be what you were looking for.

Check out their website and give them a call or send an email and I am sure they will give you all the details.

Give me a call on Wednesday when I have had chance to rtalk to my partner. I can then tell you where we got our workshop stand from - it was built locally.

i normally use a standard workstand that clamps to the seat post.  i have a small stool that i set the front wheel on to keep the bike level and steady. never had a problem with the seatpost.

my back up and for general longer term storage is the same as my neighbors - i have a large post that runs the length of my garage and i have a rubber coated hook screwed into it where i hang my seat.  i have another hook also screwed into the ceiling about 2 feet away where i attach a rope loop.  i slip the rope around the stem, run the loop thru itself and attach the loose end to the other ceiling hook - the rope is adjusted long enough to level the bike.  the whole bike is hanging from the ceiling of the garage -

this way most of the mechs of the bike are just below shoulder to eye level and i can walk around the bike for cleaning and fixing things. works great and is dirt cheap.
