New fork or shock?

I have a Proflex 856 with the Girvin fork and a ODS shock with spring in the front.
I am thinking about a Stratos or Helix shock replacement on the Girvin or would it be better to replace the whole fork with a Talas or something similar (100mm?).
Please give me some suggestions or advice, I will be trying to keep this a great XC bike.

if you wanna keep it XC put a used x-link on it, or get one of those closeout mega~airs at ediscountbike.com

i don't know about putting another shock up there, on that fork

the TALAS is a very nice fork but kinda pricey for that frame (IMHO)

I would go with an old Vector crosslink. One was just sold on ebay for 60$ Canadian (about 45 US). that just prooves their still out their. Or go with a newer crosslink. They would both suit the geometry on the bike.

I agree with carbon_angus about the fork being to new for such an old frame.

But I have to say if you like the frame and you think it deserves a contemporary flare, then go with what your gut tells you. Maybe We just don't understand.

I'd grab a Mega Air as Mr. Angus suggests.  Check out my posts under the "What size tire will fit a Mega Air" currently on the board for links.  Then do your own search on MTBR "Save some weight" board on the Noleen or Mega Air fork.  There are some Noleen knowledgeables there.  Also don't bid over $99-find another fork if someone bids against you as eDiscount has many on eBay.  Also under accessories 2001 at the K2 site you'll find the PDF to change the Mega into a 4 inch fork!  Very simple too.

If you want to keep the Girvin Vector2, the only replacement shocks are Noleen and a Risse Genesis.  I had a Genesis on mine and I really liked it.  I think they are about $160 from Bill Larson.  It might be cheaper to get a crosslink or you could find a vector fork with a noleen already installed.  I have only ever seen a couple of the Risse units for the Vector 2 on ebay.

The crosslink is a little lighter, has about 1/4"more travel and the links are stiffer.  The coil shock the crosslink comes with makes the fork a lot more reactive.  A risse unit will change the ride of either fork, but will lighten it up quite a bit.

I emailed a bunch of people from MTBR that had a crosslink or a vector2 and had changed the shock to a Risse Genesis and most all of them liked the difference.

I just sold my vector 2 without ODS for 85 CDN on ebay.  Your old fork is worth something.  An AL crosslink with the NR2 usually goes for $130-140 USD

 :)That leaves me with the same question to upgrade the shock or replace the fork wit a new fork or try to get a xlink. Crap these things are hard to figure out which way to go.
