Pivot bolt size/Bottom Bracket help needed!
« on: December 21, 2003, 01:54:10 am »
Just wondering if the pivot bolt from my 5000 is the same size as my crank bolts. I need something to hold the Park BB-2 tool snugly against the BB while I jump on it. The cheapo frame I bought for my SS project has a BB that is both shot AND seized. I know there are a million ways to get these things out, but I have limited resources (i.e. no bench vise or cheater bar) and my patience is wearing thin.

I've tried soaking it in WD-40. The BB does not have a hollow spindle, so I can't use a QR skewer to hold the thing in place. Grrrrr... >:(

Any ideas? (Preferrably using commonly available household items...) Once I get this taken care of, I can finish the bike. Seems like there's always ONE little detail that just doesn't work!  :o

I'm afraid not the b/b is a metric fine pitch the pivot is metric medium pitch, how about using G clamp ? or find a suitable pitch bolt from a hardware store, sorry all I can think of a the moment.Simon

Yes, the clamp is a good idea. Maybe my wife will get me one for Christmas... (I can't believe I don't already have one).

Thanks for the info on the pivot bolt. I do need to do a "jiffy lube" on my pivot, but wasn't too excited about doing it right away...

Matno,
I have taken my bb apart and have put it back on, and I recall that one of the cups has an inverted thread, so that tightening and loosening is backwards.
Just a warning thought that comes to mind.

If not inmediately, the oil should help loosening. Bringing the bike to a hardware store is prob the best idea for finding the bolt you need.

Well, I got impatient, and.... SUCCESS!

I didn't have a bolt or a big enough C-clamp, so I just used a nylon webbing strap and cinched it on real tight. Then I used my handlebars as a cheater bar and voila! Finally got the darn thing off. Only took a week of daily soaking in WD-40 and jumping on it! Fortunately, once I got the tough side out, the other side, which was plastic and had most of its teeth stripped, came right out. I was afraid I was going to have to Dremel it out. Now, I just have to wait for a couple of parts from my brother in law to arrive, and I'll have a complete bike!

Check out my other post about a homemade chain tensioner...
