Shock rattling on upper bolt
« on: November 01, 2003, 04:14:59 am »
On another post, the question of customer service came up and I remembered this. I bought an 856 and the rear upper shock bolt was threaded too far down the shank making it undersized to the bushing. I contacted Proflex and was told it was the right bolt and only I had a problem with it. I found the right bolt-problem solved. Later bought a 957-came with same bolt-called now K2 and again was told it was just me. I fixed it again. I found a VW caliper bolt (plenty hard, quality) with a long shank, cut it to length, chamfered the head to minimize scratches to my legs if I come in contact...no more rattles on the downhills.

Surely even with a slightly undersized bolt it shouldn't rattle as the bush is clamped in place by the torque loading applied to the bolt and nothing should then move unless the bolt was under torqued thus allowing the bush to move around the bolt within the frame thus rattling?
Simon.

The hundreds of pounds of force pulling and pushing on the suspension far exceed the minimal clamping force on the bolt-unless you crush the snot out of it and smash everything together.

100in/lbs of torque on the bolt is all that is required, had an 856(still got it)for 7yrs never encountered or known of a problem with the upper shock bolt, yes half the thread does sit in the bearing tube but when correctly torqued nothing moves as long as the bolt is of the correct grade and able to achieve the recommended torque loading everything should be fine, infact the shank on the bolt Proflex used is undersized compared to the thread diameter, also found the lower shock bolt on an 4500/Oz has 16mm of thread inside the bearing of an overall bearing width of 23mm but using the recommended torque value of 150in/lbs again never encountered a problem, also the lower strut bolts on an 856 are not bolts but setscrews (threaded there o/all length) so no shank sits within the bearings, surely the top shock bolt is exactly that a bolt used to retain the top shock sleeve allowing the shock bearing to rotate around it,I can see your point ideally there should be a shank the complete length of the bush and of a diameter that just gives enough clearance to fit into the bush this is good engineering practice, but the bolt has to still be torqued sufficiently to ensure the sleeve is clamped so the shock bearing rotates around it otherwise the sleeve could start to rotate around the bolt(not good).Simon
