Hi there. I have an XTR crank with 46-34-24 on my 856 and everything works fine. I do not use a top swing deraileur. It is a standard (bottom swing?!?). My frame is an 18" and the deraileur clamp is raised as far as possible. I wanted to go with a 48-36-26 setup but I don't think I can make that work... I haven't tried it yet though.
I do remember trying a topswing XTR when I worked in a bike shop and it did not work with my 46-34-24 setup. Maybe you could try the E-type deraileur that mounts to the bottom bracket. If you are running 8 speed, just go pick up an old standard bottom swing XT or LX. I think they have 9 speed bottom swing as well. Check ebay. The clamp size should be 31.8 bottom pull.
Hope this helps,
Trevor

I got a Deore XT 31.8 front gear. When i say there is no room, i mean i cant raise the front gear any higher. It works but the shifting is very out. I'm a mechanic myself and i cant fix this. This is pretty wierd.

If the f/mech is a high as it will go (just where the tube starts to bend) this should accommodate a 44t ring no problem,as you've fitted a new crank it may not of gone onto the B/B taper (I'm assuming your B/B is a square taper unit) as far as the one you replaced so the f/mech's H stop may need adjusting(anti clockwise) to allow the f/mech to swing over the ring a little further,as you've said that you can get it onto the 44t ring then the f/mech must be high enough as long as it doesn't foul the teeth as you operate the shifter, hope this is of some help, Simon.
