Nearly crapped my pants when I looked up the MSRP on MTBR for my bike, the Ozm and the Ozx (superlight). They were around that $4k mark as a total build. I got my frame&fork for $799 in late 01 and spent about $1000 on the parts to build her. Now im ready to sink about $600 into suspension, rather than build another $2K bike  :P

i bought my 4000 in '98 and i don't remember the 5500 costing $4200. more like $3200.
just remember that the frame, though unique, is 6 years old now. new 5500's were selling for $1500 2 years after they came out.

I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED THE PROFLEX RIDE! I SAW THE 5500 ON EBAY AND THE BIKE WAS MINT... THE ONLY SCRATCHES WERE ON THE BOTTOM WHERE THE CRANK IS! THE FRAME IS SO PERFECT, THAT IT ALMOST LOOKS NEW! ALL STICKERS ARE MINT AND THE GUY SAID HE ONLY ROAD IT WHEN HE AND HIS WIFE WOULD GO ON THE BOARDWALK! SO I ENDED MY AUCTION THAT WAS AT 834.00M DOLLARS BECAUSE I THINK ITS WORTH KEEPING FOR THAT PRICE!  AS FAR AS THE PRICE WHEN IT WAS NEW, THE GUY TOLD ME HE PAID 4000.00 FOR IT, BUT I DID NOT KNOW FOR SURE! ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE WHAT THE NEW PRICE WAS FOR THIS BIKE??? 5500 WITH SMART SHOCK!

Ediscount bike sold off a bunch of the carbon/smartshock frames for $500 about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, that started 1 month AFTER I bought my aluminum 5000... :(

Having watched EVERY K2 auction on ebay for the last couple of years (okay, most at least), I'd have to say that the carbon '98-99 frames usually go for $400-500 while complete bikes go for $700-1100. RARELY more than that, and usually only if they have fancy setups (like kevlar spoked wheels...)

K2 5000 Med ("wife's") w/Avid V's, Mavic CrossLink wheels, Manitou X-vert, Risse Astro-5

In May 97 I purchased my 957, within 4 months I was watching Saturday AM telly (here in the UK), and some Scandinavian guy was racing a 5500C for the Proflex Team and won.  You guessed it, I wanted one!

A bit later my LBS had a new 5500c c/w carbon frame and Xlinks and it was £1800.  Having only recently got my new 957 I left the bike shop downhearted.  The fully specced bike was £3999.

18 months later I went back to the same LBS for some tyres, commented that they had had a 5500c, and was amazed when the guy said 'we still have it'.  Within ½ hr I walked out of the shop with it for £700 (had to hide it in the garage until wifey agreed it was time to change my 957!)

No looking back - even with all the new innovations.

I had a similar buying experience with my Oz and with my car.
first, Oz experience. I remember seeing them in a magazine and I thought that I just had to have one. It was soooo cool looking. but, I remember seeing the prices as around US 2000 for the frame, so I said forget it.
then a year or more later, I was fooling around on ebay, and just for fun I searched for K2 OzM. up came a couple auctions for frames from ediscount.
I got in touch with them and bought one for I think about US 600. it pays to wait.

car: in 1989 Chrysler came out with a super shadow called the Shelby CSX. Same thing as bike, read the reports, saw the pictures, had to have one. one problem was the price was US 17G. more than I wanted to pay.
a year later a guy I worked with showed me an ad for a local dealer that had twelve of them, new for 12G. they only made 498 of these things in 1989, and that was it.
I went down to the dealer and picked it up. I still drive it everyday and with the variable nozzle intercooled turbo, composite wheels, and Recaro seats, it'll still blow the doors off most souped up rice burners, and this thing is still stock as it came from Shelby. it even beats alot of waaaaay more expensive cars, even with a bike in the back!! I am still waiting for a better car to come along after 14 years.
it does pay to wait if you're willing to be one step behind the latest thing.
perhaps I should have waited to get my Fox Talas fork, but had to have one right away.
thats my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Oh I forgot, the brand new (still in box) Oz-M I won on ebay (USA) in May this year I got for $450, and my brother-in-law brought it back this summer from Baltimore in his suitcase (swingarm removed), so P&P cost nothing.
