Best size Proflex 955 for me
« on: May 30, 2014, 09:39:28 pm »
Hi Guys

First post from me, currently chasing down a proflex and am not sure what the best size for me would be. I am 180cm. Would a 20 Inch 955 be to big?

cheers

Here are few measurements sent through by the seller. I am thinking the size should be of for me.

I also double checked my height - I'm actually 185cm (I thought I was taller)

The bb to top tube is 50cm (see pics)

The cranks are 7" (177mm)
The seat tube is 10.5" (265mm) with 6" (150mm) above the tube clamp
Pedal to seat height is approx 860

If you look at pic #2 you see I have the seat tube adjusted up into the clamp to suit my height

Given that you're only 5cm shorter than me, and I have the seat adjusted up, you should fit this frame pretty good.
I think the main issue if anything would be the seat post height - I don't know what lengths posts come in, but with 15cm (6")
above the clamp, they seems plenty of scope to shorten the existing post (or put on a shorter one), or remove the adjustment stop and adjust the post down more.

find one that is a medium.  That's what I ride and I am 5'-9" (180 cm) although I was still 5'-10" when I bought my 855 new.    Those cranks are 170mm?  All mine are 175mm and came that way from the factory.

I'm 188cm and a medium is too small for me. I ride a large. I'd agree and say a medium should suit you fine. The 20" Proflex is a way big and that would be way too big for you.

The measurements the seller is quoting have no real relevance as to identifying the frame size as both medium and large measure the same from bb to seat tube. The measurement you need is the top tube length from center seat tube to center head tube.  I can't remember the measurements right now but someone will no doubt step in with them soon.
Check if the frame still has it's size sticker on the seat tube, small, medium, large, way big.

Thanks for the replies, here is a link to some images of the bike. To me it looks like it is not a XL. I will get the measurements for the top tube length from center seat tube to center head tube

i think a 955 would still be described in inches
A way big is 20,a large is 18,med 16 samll 14.I am 190cm and ride a way big.Sometimes i feel its too long. The difference between a large and a way big is in the "top tube " and stem,1/2 inn in each.Somewhere there is a chart,or link for al this.A way big may be all right if you use a shorter stem. From memory my 756 20 in has a 150mm stem and the large has a 135mm

I'd say that is a Large,
Reasons: (based on x56 observations)
Way Bigs have long seattubes
Mediums have the top tube bend more in the middle of the length rather than at the seat end.
Smalls have the top shock mount in the seat tube metal.

ergo it's a Large

I'd suggest you're in the middle between a Medium and a Large and so either should be fine for you with a bet of tweaking. I'm 174cm (5'8") tall and I like my Mediums for off road and my Large's for Road riding.

Looks like a very nice bike.

Thanks one and all. Deal is done and it should be on it's way tomorrow. Looking forward to getting it up and running. I have a couple of sets of Girvin forks ready and waiting.

Great!

That shock looks interesting, badged as a "Giant GTM" isn't it?

Never seen one of those as an after market replacment before!

Although I was looking at the Giant Pistol shock to ascertain it's suitability sometime ago..............

You'll have to tell us all about it when you get your sticky hands on the bike! <GRIN>

Well I stand most humbly corrected. ..   Went and checked and surprise surprise, the tape measure is more accurate than my memory.   I have three larges and a small, no mediums.

Will  do Colin. Looking forward to it arriving.

The guy is quiet good to chat to an apparently he brought it of his mate who used to work at a shop. It was built up with full XTR and had had the rear rim replaced as it was buckled. The front shock was recently rebuilt.

I will take some pics once it arrives. Will be interesting to see how it rides as is.

That looks a real nice ride with great spec. Good decision, you'll do just fine with that bike. Are you going to restore the frame or leave as is?

Hi Chris

will restore the frame and update the components. If anyone needs the XTR stuff let me know. I will be going XTR M952 or maybe even more modern. Bike should be here this week so will make a decision on it then.

Cool, I shall follow your progress with interest as I have a 955 waiting in line to be built up. Mine is a Way Big (20") and if you look at the extended seat tube you'll notice it longer. That's the only visible difference. The stand over height is the same as your large but the top tube is slightly longer to acomidate the taller rider.

Mine has some corrosion under the laquer as yours does so I'll be interested to see how yours polishes up.

Your frame has also had the seat tube braces re-profiled to fit the after market shock. It's a neat job and solves the age old problem of shock upgrades with this style frame.
I'd like to see what's been done to the bottom of the shock to enable it to fit to the strut as that's a very neat job.

Are you in the UK as I might be interested in the Xtr bits for this build?

Hi Chris, nice frame, I will take some pics of the rear shock mod when it arrives, should be here by the end of the week. I am in Australia but will let you know when I strip it down. Going to take if for a ride first to see what it's like.

I have some Girvins on my Kona Sex Too at the moment and really like them. So they will be going on this for sure.
