EPOXY RESIN CLEAR COATING HELP PLEASE!
«
on:
January 08, 2013, 05:27:47 am »
Hi all
Ive a 5500 and a 4500 in the uk that im interested in revamping, Ive seen a few posts here about applying epoxy resin to give that NEW polished look to the carbon frames.
Does anyone have any clear instructions as to how to go about this? what type of epoxy resin? where to get it from? how to apply it etc..
Any help much appreciated!

As far as I know, the carbon frames were never polished in the first place. However, adding more resin will just make a terrible mess; it would be better to remove the decals and use a polycarbonate-safe polishing compound instead.
Post a picture so we can tell you whether your frame actually needs restoration. If the surface of the resin has a satin finish, it's probably already as good as new.

What a few people have done successfully on this forum is to clear coat their frames with 2 pack laquer. Sand it first then 3 coats had been recomended, rubbing the frame down between coats. I'd be inclined to put as little on as you need to give a nice finish so as to not add too much weight.
The 4500 in the for sale section a few posts back with different wheels has been 2 packed and it looks better than new. He used a satin finish on the last coat but if you wanted it shiney just use gloss.
Ill forward you the email he sent me with the full details of paper grades etc if you want.
I'm going to do mine when I get around to it.

Thanks for the reply guys Chris I'd appreciate it if you could forward me the email.
This is more a little project of vanity rather than a need .
Here's my bike I'm thinking of doing polishing up doesn't really need it but as I said in my initial post I've a 4500 that ill try first.

Pm sent with email.
Theres so much to look at with your bike, its a good looking ride. Is the rear shock ride hight set low as the frame looks to be lower on the back than normal?
