Help on cranks and bottom bracket for k2 5500
« on: August 30, 2011, 08:35:37 pm »
hi guys,
i am new here. i just registered. ive had my carbon k2 5500 frame for about 12yrs now. sadly kept in storage all the while. i dint have time always busy with work and family and NOW i want to start to ride again so i thought of bringing my bike to life. i am having troubles of what cranks and bottom i need for this bike as i am concerned about the ring rubbing on the sway arm or pivot. all i know is the bottom bracket i need is a 173 although i have no idea about the length or the specs for this bike. i would like to use the FSA K-force light triple carbon crankset with a ceramic BB cups BC-1.37 x 73mm.  is this the correct size?  pls  HELP!

I don't know your answer but regular BBs that fit the 5500 is 73 x 113.

If you can crossreference this I think you will have your answer.

shimano has a tech spec page to cross reference the 73x113 old bottom backet to the new ones. for my 1000 i just changed from old to new and went with 73x126mm. works perfect. same clearence as with the old. i am asuming your refering to the big chainring. the new bottom brackets fit deeper into the crank than the old, just remember though, the new bottom brackets do not work with the old crank.

Just for clarification, the K Force cranks you are looking at are external bearing cranks.  The BB cups will plug right in, so the BB is no problem and does not dictate how far out the crankset sits.  with external you size the BB (68mm, 73mm, BB30, ect) to take up the proper amount of space between the crank arms.  I checked FSA's site, you either order the Mega Exo BB for 73mm, or leave the shims out, one of the 2 (so yes that is the right cup).  You are right to be concerned about clearance issues, but with a triple I am fairly confident you will be fine as the chainline and q-factors should be the same same if not just a tad narrower.  It's the double that I want that I'm worried about.  I built up an early 2000's Jamis hardtail with SRAM X9 2X10 last year.  The clearance from the end of the crank arms to the chain stays was tight, but I have received no complaints.  Not sure things will clear on my 5500 though.

If I go into the shop tomorrow I will take a good look my bike an see if I can see any potential issues.

Sory, for the delay.  I didn't go to the shop yesterday.  I looked at my bike today, and you will have no problems with clearance.  Actually, with a 50mm chainline, it may be a few mm further away from the frame.  According to Sheldon Brown's site the XTR 950 cranks that came on the 5500 had a chainline from 47.5mm to 50mm (which he also states is the standard chainline for MTB) with spindle lengths from 112mm to 116mm.  Since our spindle lengths were 113mm I am thinking our stock chainline is somewhere around 48mm.  The cranks you want have a stock chain line of 50mm.  This is not the end of the world, and I am not even sure you will notice.  But the real good news is you can go ahead and run those cranks.  Let us know how it works out!

the new bottom brackets arent really length determined anymore all you need is the shell # 73 for the k2's. the either have shims or adjust to the length

External crank bearings require a professional install the first time. The shop needs to use a tool that trims the metal on the sides of the BB housing, so the crank bearings will sit perfectly parallel when they're installed. Otherwise they'll be slightly crooked (due to the coating of paint if nothing else) and they'll bind against the crank spindle when they rotate.
