I cannot thank you enough for keeping this alive Grimjack.

I am by nature, a freak a bit of a hermit and stick with my favorite stuff to the bitter end.  All the contrary information regarding the Proflex is just so much meaningless babble to me and I love my 855 and 856's with the purportedly weird forkage.

A RAID setup would not cost very much. All it would take is two SATA hard drives and this RAID controller for $16: http://cgi.ebay.com/PNY-Technologies-NetCell-SR5000-5-Port-RAID-Card-/270749021016?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f09e63358

I have several of these NetCell RAID cards in use and they all work splendidly.

A whip round means a collection of money. British slang not a fancy bit of computer or a dodgy fetish pass time, lol.

I agree though, if a solution is to all chip in and buy something then im willing. But I know nothing about computers so i'll leave it up to Grimjack. He is God!

Dang. I was all set to go grab my chain whip, my bung threader, and my nipple wrenches.  ;)

Still no bids on that RAID controller. Only 16 bucks.

Yes, I did.  They decided to change my IP without warning me in advance, and I didn't notice until I started getting emails from disappointed members.  Thanks for the heads up by the way folks!  Then it took me a while to figure out what had happened - of course, I assumed the worst, figuring I had something wrong on my end again.  Imagine my surprise when I figured out what had happened... I've had the same IP for well over a decade, so it was a bit of a surprise.

On the positive side, my pipe to the internet is significantly bigger now - the reason my IP changed was that they upgraded me to 2.5 times the speed I had before.

On the subject of RAIDs, I'm going to suggest we hold off.  To be frank, over the years I've had way more problems with hacks or security breaches than I have hardware failure, and the only measure that works in all cases is backup data.  Furthermore, the worst thing that's ever happened - the recent hard drive failure - still only set us back by about 3 weeks of posts, which, to be honest, is pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things.  Also, it would have been even less if I'd gotten the backup scripts installed and running again after putting in the new hard drive - normally I have backups that are at most 2 weeks old.

There is a reason all but the least expensive brand-name servers come with RAID arrays. What happened over the past few weeks is why. I don't even run my desktop PC without a 2-disk RAID, and I don't use my laptop for anything important so it doesn't matter if its single hard drive fails.

True enough... and if it were winter outside, and miserable, I'd be a lot more likely to bite the bullet and set one up.  However, it's summer, so I'll spend my spare time outside on the pedals instead.  You're welcome to come over and play with the server in the meanwhile. :)
