Size question regards a 857
« on: May 01, 2010, 08:29:13 am »
Hi, I know I need a size small Proflex frame ideally but they seem to be as rare as hens teeth but I have the chance to buy a Proflex 857 the seller says its a medium which he translates to be a 17" frame. Now the question I have is I am 5' 4" with a 28/29" inside leg will this frame fit me or is it going to be way too big? Excuss my ignorance as I have never owned a Proflex but would very much like to :) Thanks Pete

Hi Pete,
I think a Medium will be 18 inch, at least my XP-X (856) is. I have a 29/30 inch inside leg, so that will be OK, but I'm not sure about the reach.

You could put a short stem on it to bring the bars to you.

If it's a decent bike at decent money then give it a go. If it does not work out you will always get your money back & you could ride this until you get a small one.

Yes, medium is 18 inch.

I bought my wife a small 957. The standover is ok for her(5ft), but the toptube is really short.

Just my 2 cents, but everyone needs 2 bikes. For the right price, try the medium, and keep your eyes open for a small.

I disagree! <GRIN>

A Medium is a 16" frame

857's came in four sizes:
14" Small        (recognized by upper shock bolt fixing being partially within the top tube)
16" Medium    (top tube bend between seat tube and head tube)
18" Large       (top tube bend directly in front of seat tube)
20" Way Big    (top tube bend same as Large and tall seat tube)

The inch measurements above are "virtual" measurements i.e. the frame is equivalent to "traditional" frames of that size, so it's very difficult make an actual measurement that results in one of those sizes!

Hope that helps!

P.s. I'm 5' 8" with a 31" inside Leg and my Medium XP-X (856) is about right for me, but maybe I could wear a Large...........<GRIN>

The saddle can go a long way lower on my frame (see Gallery) and the top tube is only about 35mm longer on a Medium than a Small.

and I had a Medium 857 frame and it was exactly the same dimensions as my XP-X.

I believe there's a few issues with shock fitting on Smalls so I think I'd always recommend a Medium if you can fit it.

Well, I have "Actual measurements".
Large 957 = 19" from center of bottom bracket to top of toptube at seatmast weld.
Small 957 = 17" from center of BB to top of toptube.

Maybe XPx measure some other way?

I think the way Proflex did the size measurement is possibly slightly different.

My XP-X has the original size sticker & it's an 18 inch

With a tape measure it's 20 inch from centre BB to top of seat tube & 19 inch from BB to weld. Nothing obvious appears to be 18 inch.

IMHO, I believe that the 14, 16, 18, 20 sizes are "notional" frame sizes but can be measured from the centre of the BB to the Centre of the top tube, at least that is correct on my 16" Medium XP-X (x56 frame)

The photo Pete (Smurf) has shown me is of a Medium x57.

Here's the supposed true measurements that were quoted for the 2000/3000 which was the x57 frame as sold in 1998.

Size TT   CS   WB   HT   C2T SO BBH FR HTA STA
small 537 430 1043 120 482 701 304 44 71.6 75.6
med 562 432 4060 120 510 750 302 44 71.4 74.4
large 587 432 4085 120 510 752 302 44 71.4 74.4
WB 615 434 1117 160 545 781 298 44 71.1 74.1

All measurements are to the nearest millimeter. Angles in degrees.
TT = Top tube
CS = Chainstay
WB = Wheel base
HT = Head tube
C2T = Center to tube (from BB to top tube midline)*
C2C = Center to center (from BB to seat tube top)
SO = Stand over
BBH = Bottom bracket height
FR = Fork rake
HTA = Head tube angle
STA = Seat tube angle

Dunno if that helps.........

Colin. I found a chart from our file section that comfirms your numbers. A large would be an 18 inch, so it would be measured center of toptube to BB.

I'm 5'6" (5'7" on a good day) and I can fit either a medium or a large.

My wife is barely 5' and was comfortably riding a medium 856 for a year or so, before I snagged her a small 955 frame. I think you'll be fine with the medium.
