What bolt for Ti spindle
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:04:40 am »
I am using a Ti bottom bracket in the OzM I am building. Is it ok to use aluminum bolts for the crankarms or should I use Ti? Trying hard not to be a weight weenie but it's hard not to when I am just buying the parts for the first time and not upgrading them.

I've had bad experiences with alloy crank bolts (like SRP etc) - they just undo themselves :( Even tightening the cranks on with steel ones, undoing the steel bolts and putting on alloy ones for show still doesn't work...

Ditto. The last thing you need is to strip or break a ti screw in the BB.

I use ti bolts in my bikes, but seat the cranks with a standard set of steel bolts also.

You can find alot of Ritchey Ti BB bolts on Fleabay. Just remember to use copper grease or anti-sieze in a ti BB. Blue loctite is good for steel BB.

(Anti seize comment)
Slather on the anti seize.  I had to remove aluminum cups from from an aluminum frame for a Ti Action Tec BB.  The original owner had not put any anti seize on the cups.  After much work and PB Blaster, I removed one cup.  I destroyed the wrench notches removing it.  The second cup would not budge.  I had to carefully cut and chisel out the cup.  I used a dremel tool with cut off wheel to cut slots in the cup.  Got out without damageing the BB threads.
