I don't really know for sure what the largest size is but I'm running 2.4 Mutanoraptor Races on my small 856 with no problems or issues. I'v even had them load up with mud and still haven't had any serious problems, but then we don't have that very sticky and tenacious stuff that the UK seems to have everywhere.

A 2.3 Specialized Enduro fits, but I wouldn't want to go any bigger.  Tyre size varys hugely between manufacturers though!
Proflex 856 now complete! :)

As RhinoDave says, it does depend on the ground conditions.

I have run Tioga Psycho Edge and TT tyres that are marked as 1.95" but actually measure 2.2"
and also WTB Velociraptor 2.1"s and both of these tyres can clog up so badly on our Beds/Bucks/Northants (UK) Mud and chalk that both the front and rear refuse to go around! That was on my XP-X (856)
They're both good tyres when it's very wet and muddy, but when it gets a bit drier and claggy then they're not so good.
The 4000se and Oz swingarms don't clog nearly so badly but then again I do run different tyres on them.
Panaracer Mach SK 1.95" that are actually 1.8"  (Great in drier conditions)
and
Panaracer Fire XC Pro 1.8" and 2.1"  (Not so good in deep wet mud, but overall, currently my favourite)

The biggest issue I had with wide tyres was getting them past the Magura's when changing the wheel!

Thanks for the good advice. My local bike shops are never any help when it comes to my 856. They just give me this clueless look when I tell them what I have and what I want to do. Thier answer is " I have this great demo on the floor I can make you a deal on" LOL.
