What do you do when you mash a quad ring?
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:15:06 am »
My Animal pivot point is in great nick and I thought I would give it a grease and oil change while it's pouring with rain here, but - shudder, in my pit crew haste - I totalled one of the quad ring thingy seals. I can't see any reason why some thin O-rings that fit in the grooves shouldn't work to keep crud out of the pivot. I couldn't find any locally but surely in the big city I should find something. Anyone have ideas about a plan for this? Thanks

OUCH!

I think everyone has done it at one time or another. If you can figure how to keep the o ring from dropping out, let us know. I think that is why used the quad ring.

since it's a seal only and not holding any pressure, a regular o-ring will work just fine.
Clean the o-ring with soap and water, be sure it and the groove are dry. then put a little RTV in the groove. Place it, give it 10 minutes to skin then lube the sliding side and assemble.

Disclaimer;
I have no idea what the parts you're assembling look like, but I know o-rings and quad rings.

i've always greased them up pretty good and used the spreader technique by pinching the drop-outs on the strut type or using Simon's neat jig spread for the the cantilever swing-arm style.

my nemesis has been one of the rings in the front x-link shock assembly

Thanks Guys,

Got all that. Being the mechanically inclined - rip, %#$@#, bust type - I generally don't do much research before I set into these projects and tend to do the homework when disaster prevails. Doesn't always pay!

Thanks for the help, it's about sorted.

If yours has a carbon arm and you want it to be hassel free refitting the swingarm then checkout the
thread quad rings no problem (you will never mash one again)in the files section or read here
