Proflex 856 new Rear Shock question
« on: June 24, 2008, 04:38:14 am »
Hello,

i recently bought an Proflex 856 on ebay with the usual bug : the elastomers are hard. I want to change them with a spring or an other system. After i combed through your forum i found out 4 alternatives :

1. a risse genesis
2. a stratos helix
3. and a noleen shock
4 .or a COR spring upgrade that fits my bike.   (is therer another alternative?)

The Problem is, that i have no idee where to get one of these shocks! Either there out of stock everywhere or i don´t know if they fit. I found on ebay a noleen NR2 : (http://cgi.ebay.com/Noleen-Shock-for-K2-OZ-M_W0QQitemZ130232121407QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130232121407&_trkparms=72%3A552%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)
but the ending dont look compatible with my bike. Perhaps anyone can help me answering this question?

Or sells anybody one of the shocks oder knows where i can dig it up?
Or can anyone organize me an adapter or teach to build one for usual shocks?

Thanks in advance

Uwe

PS : nice forum!

Welcome aboard. I have a 856 that I have installed an ODS from a later model. I got it off eBay a while back. I keep thinking of upgrading but I keep finding other uses for the money. Where are you located? That will make a difference how easy it will be to find what you want. We have a really good forum here with lots of folks very willing to help so I am sure someone will help you out better soon.

856 should already have the ODS damper so a spring kit is prolly the best bang for the Euro.I thought that Callum(rapid descent) had some now.

the shock you illustrate in your post should fit your bike. The "9" series is the strut tyoe bike. The 856 should have a cone end like shown in the pic with the red adjuster wheel

Hi,

a ODS Shock is in the bike. Here i´ve made a pic of them :

http://uwe-kroner.privat.t-online.de/ODS.JPG
http://uwe-kroner.privat.t-online.de/Proflex.JPG

A spring kit would be the best solution i think so, but rapid descent is out of stock. I`ve already written a mail (but no answer till now).Perhaps the get one in near future!

It looks like the ending of the shock in ebay is too thick? At my bike i only see a thin elongate ending...?!?

Thank you

Greets

Uwe

where your ods fixes to the silver strut there is a cone shaped end which will(should) match the cone shape of the shock on ebay. The strut has a matching cone shaped indentation

they look compatible - the only question may be if the new shock is too long??? don't think so though.

I did a Speedspring coil spring conversion on my XP-X (856) and it is much better than MCU's, I now have Titanium Springs on it, which offsets the increased weight of coils over MCU's.
I'm sure RDI (Callum) will get some more in soon, he probably just doesn't hold a lot of stock at any one time.

I'd be a bit careful of riding your 856 while the MCU's are so squashed, you could risk damaging the ODS shock.

Hi there,

I have got some cor springs on order - the problem I have is that they're really expensive to get made and then sometimes they're in stock for months and then sell out over a weekend.  very very odd demand patterns for springs and elastomers these days...

I'll post a note here first when they come in so regulars get first chance.

This will probably be the last year for elastomers and springs from rds - am riding a lot more now on an orange 5 - that I keep saying is the bike that K2 should have progressed to.  single pivot, 5" travel bike.

cheers

After finding all the information in this post I began thinking...how much more would it be to get a pair of Risse Genesis shocks as opposed to the COS upgrade from Callum for my existing ODS shocks? I mean, if I'm going to spend possibly over $100 or more on a new pair of springs, I might be tempted to send that money in the directio0n of a totally new pair of shocks. Thoughts?

OR, is there a chance that anyone out there has a spare set of springs they'd sell, until the COD upgrades are available (Callum, any idea when they might be in?). I'm definitely impatient ;-) I cleaned up this cheap-o 856 frame I got for $50 and it turned out to be in excellent condition under all the dried mud. All I need are springs.

Thanks!

I think I would look for a good economy slider fork for the front while I waited for the springs to become available. You can get a decent one for less than $100 on feabay.

A risse shock for the rear is the way I would go.

The combination of the 2 would be a winner IMO.

I did try to buy a big batch of the risse shocks - but the cost was enormous.  Each shock would have cost GBP200 (with the 856 cone attachment) which works out at about 400 USD - i.e., at that price, you should be looking to  buy a new frame.  Also, these risse shocks had to be a little shorter than normal because of the short shock arrangement in the 856.  It would have only fit the 16,18 and 20 inch frames on the 856 and would not have fit the x55 series.

So, instead, I went for the USD100 price point for springs made at a local factory here in Scotland - well, that was 3 years ago and since then the US Dollar has crashed in value making them look more expensive - but be the same price here.  I decided to not make any springs in the early part of the year because of the US Dollar currency exchange problem - (costs me 1000's of dollars to sit on a big batch of springs) so I decided to wait.  the good news is that I have ordered springs, the bad news is that the CNC factory are all on holiday!!!

look in the RDS forum for information about when they are for sale.

Just purchased the Risse Genisis for my 856 World Cup to replace the rear shock.  I had a problem getting the shock installed initially.  The bolt that came with the shock was to thick in the shank area to fit all the way through the strut bolt hole.  The Risse rep I contacted was puzzled by this and mentioned I could be sent another bolt, but it would be the same size.  ???  I pulled out my caliper and measured the old Strut bolt and found the shanked area to be .5 mm smaller than the thread area.  The Risse bolt has the same measurement from threads to shank.  What I ended up doing was tappering the shanked area on the Risse bolt by .5 mm to make it fit.  Watch out for this problem if you go with Risse.  Also, you will want to watch the threads on the Risse Shock.  I endup pulling out one full thread before I realized the bolt would not fit through the hole.  Bolt is steel, shock is aluminum.  Ended up using blue loctite to ensure a good hold and not strip out all the threads.
