5500 Bottom Bracket insert?
« on: June 04, 2008, 05:06:54 am »
Hello Friends,
Having just snapped my BB axle this morning on the way to work (chainring side came off in a sprint away from some lights, having just hopped two big pavements! Talk about lucky!), I notice that the accumulated crust around the shell/frame interface shows signs of movement between the alu and the carbon (I knew I would find a reason for not washing it ;-) )
Has anyone had their BB shell come unglued?
If so, is it a simple tube, or are there shoulders?
I have a nasty feeling I’m in for a bit of work and I wouldn’t mind knowing what I’m up against before I charge in.

I changed the bearings only about 15000km ago (sealed type for the Hope BB) didn’t notice anything then.

(for info on the other thread; it was a 109 mm square taper with Middleburns. RIP Hope titanium)

Thanks in advance
Luke

I have not heard of a BB shell coming loose. If so, it should not be too difficult to take out. If it is the same adhesive as the swingarm pivot, you should have no problem. Are you sure it is loose, or just collecting corrosion?

Hi Terry. There's definitely movement on the chainring side. What I can't decide is whether it's just the normal plastic flex, or whether something has come adrift.
I broke the removal tool on the RH cup last night (it was perfectly clamped in place, I just had a HUGE bar on the spanner) and the shell didn't turn.
If I manage to get the existing BB out (drill, hacksaw, hammer) I think I'l just jetwash the area, and then pour super glue down the crack and hope. I'll have an idea ot hte depth of the gap by how much glue goes in. Anyone have any suggestions for another glue just as runny (not the gel) that I could use that is perhaps less brittle?

Might be time to save a favourite search on the Bay...

Who owns the molds for the OZ/5500?

"If you have a big enough lever, you could move planets"
I think Newton said that

All clamped tightly in place with a QR skewer, wouldn't budge. I had already loosened the other side (LH -but not taken it out- d'oh!)
Big lever on a big pipe wrench and crack, all six pins went at once.
It's a Hope shoulderless cup within the shell; even if I were turning it the wrong way it would have turned as the other side was loose.

Silly thing is that I've found a replacement axle (isn't Ebay marvellous), all I needed to do was take out the LH cup and slide in the new axle. The side to side adjustment would be the same..
But do you think I can find a 6 pin BB tool anywhere in my area of France?
Of course not...
If anyone has one, can I borrow it?
I'll pay postage etc.
