Carbon Swingarm (Oz) crankarm clearance
« on: April 08, 2008, 09:13:09 am »
I am helping a bud build up his Oz and have a question about crank arm clearance.  My Oz with Race Face 5-arm cranks has generous clearance between the swingarm and cranks as the cranks rotate.  He wants to use cranks off of his 855 and with a 113 bb but they offer only about 1/4 inch or 6.5mm clearance on the nondrive side and a bit more on the drive side.  Too me that seems a bit close.  If anyone knows what is spec., please post.  Otherwise, if you have an Oz, 4000 or 5000, will you measure the distance from the inside of the crank arms to the swingarm at the closest point and post to compare.

Thanks

with some xt cranks and a WTB BB my left side clearance is 3/8" - no problems at all.

i think you'll be fine -

OP

Yeah, they don't make 'em anymore - it's a classic - - -

I measured my Oz with Race Face Cranks and the distance is 11 mm nondrive side and 12 mm drive side.  The Oz I am building is 1/8 inch non drive side and 1/4 inch drive side.  Once it is ready to test I can see if there is any crank arm deflection.  Different cranks with more Q factor may be in order.  May be an issue of heal rub too.

you may have chain line issues....the wc bikes use a narrower shell than the "EVO"/OZ style frames

On my Oz I have had XT hollowtech with Octalink 113 bb, and got 3/8" clearance. I now use square taper BB and crank, and still have 3/8" clearance at driveside.

Same crank clearance as driveside. Although I am using square taper with adustable driveline, I have it equal. All BBs I used on my Oz are 113.

I think your problem is Q factor design of your cranks. It probably was designed for a hardtail with narrow chainstays. You could buy a wider BB.
