Attention - webserver maintenance, Tuesday, April 8
« on: April 07, 2008, 10:47:47 am »
Folks, I'm going to have to take the server offline for a while to perform some upgrades.

The machine that runs this webserver is pretty old and decrepit by now.  It's a 1.2 Ghz Athlon processor from when that was bleeding edge speed, and it's been slowly upgraded to 2G of RAM over the years.  It doesn't get a whole lot of love, it's #4 of 5 machines that I maintain, and it's been doing a great job of ticking over without much help from me.  Unfortunately, it has been wearing down slowly.  It's recently eaten a power supply, worn out a power cord, and all three fan outlets on the motherboard have stopped working, one every 6 months or so.  Looking at the motherboard, I notice that one of the capacitors is blown - must not be used for a critical function, because it's still working fine!

Nonetheless, I'd rather retire this thing while it's still working than let it buckle and take our information with it, so I recently picked up a new mainboard, CPU and a much larger hard drive.

Right now I'm planning on pulling this machine offline Tuesday evening, PDT, and hoping to have the new machine back up and running properly in a few hours.  However, you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men...

I should be online via all the various messengers if you need to get hold of me during this time.

I'll update this thread if the timing changes before Tuesday evening.

Yup, seems to be working!  Post up if (ok, WHEN) you notice bits that are broken...

WHAT?!! That's exactly what I'M running (well, I only made it up to 1gb RM). No wonder my computer seems to be slowing down...

Actually, I'm now using my new laptop more than the desktop, but the Athlon I built up 7 years ago is still the main machine of the family... Dang, has it really been that long? That was actually a rebuild of an old 1997 Quantex Pentium II 300MHz speed demon. Still have the original power supply, tower, and Altec Lansing speakers (all going strong). But recently I got a 2.4 GHz Core 2 duo Mac Powerbook for... FREE! Couldn't pass up that deal, even if it is a Mac! It does have Boot Camp, but I'm finding I like the Mac OS interface. We'll see how long that lasts...

But I digress... On a more bike-related note, I just picked up a pair of Bebop Stainless pedals virtually brand new on Ebay for $36 USD. (It's the European version and is available online for 129 Euros).  I've been waiting for that deal for about 4 years! Not sure that I'll even use them on my mountain bikes, since we tend to do a lot of rock bashing around here, but they are AWESOME pedals for a road bike or XC mountain bike, so I'm keeping them as spares. I already have a pair on my road bike that I got used which are at least 12 years old and still function flawlessly. Totally free floating (which takes some getting used to but is great once you do), super low stack height (11mm), and about as light as pedals get (195g for a pair). Plus they're bulletproof strong. (Unless you bash them on a rock! The spindle and bearings are brutes, but the cages that engage the cleats look a little frail. They are replaceable, but unfortunately, the company just went under). And clipping out is completely resistance free... Did I mention they were $36?!

I'm not seeing the menu under the logo in the upper left corner of the screen.  No links to the gallery, how to's , etc.

Ok, I'll get to work on those.  I knew about the menu - haven't figured out how to use server side includes in apache yet - but the gallery is a surprise.  I'll post up progress...

I think I have both of those fixed.

Let me know if you find anything else broken! :)
