Rock Shox Replacement
« on: March 05, 2008, 09:19:57 pm »
Hi,

I am new to this forum, and new to Mtn Biking...

I just inherited a 98 Proflex 4000.

I am really amped...with the exception that the front forks are Rock Shox Judy XC.
I understand they blow up with riders of 150 lbs and minor drops...

I'm 200-215...Need I say more!

What forks would you recommend I replace them with?
(I'm not afraid of the money the new forks will cost...I'm afraid of the cost of the divorce if my wife finds out I spent a ton of cash on a free bike!
so money is a bit of an object!)

I will be doing most riding XC

Pura Vida!

how about some Crosslinks - you could find a pair for around £80-£100.

Welcome Kayaker.

Sounds like you will be doing some of your own wrenching. Any chance you could lube up the old forks? Might get them decent enough to like or even sell.

I like rockshox forks, and would recommend something in the lines of used Psylo with 3 to 5 inches of travel. I have one and am still beating it up. And it works perfect on my 4000 with 4 inches travel on the rear. Make sure it has the lockout with the wind-down for climbing, and you will ride with a smile.

As far as the wife. ::) Took a crowbar to make my wife open the checkbook for $395. She said that she better see me riding it.  :D

Welcome Kayaker

If you're riding in the land of Pura Vida (Costa Rica), you're going to need lot's of travel even for XC riding. Those jungles are insane!
The stories about forks blowing up tend to get multiplied and exaggerated. If it does, you can probably get a free one from SRAM on exchange.
(Unless RockShox clearly specifies rider weight limits.)

If you just want a bullet-proof long travel, cheap, and not much damping, you can buy a Suntour XCP cheap. I got a NEW one for $40 from JensonUSA and it works fine for just smashing about. (I use ALL the preload since I weigh 210 lbs.)

Go get 'em!
