Calling all Risse Air/Oil shock owners...

as some of you will know i've been trying to decide what to replace my nr2 with. almost got a genesis off Dennis but it was built for an x-link and wouldn't be optimal for the rear.
anyway, if yr reading this i guess you currently own a genesis/astro - so i was just wondering what you thought of it before i go ahead and order one myself...

I have an Astro and it is awesome.  If you want to have a near-lockout, the damping adjuster is good for this.  If not, the Genesis is basically the same shock.  Either way, you can't go wrong.

I have the terminator on a carbon frame, and the difference in the xtra setting is not enough to warrant missing the lockout you get with the Astro.  So I suggest the Astro unless you feel the need to have complete minute control over both rebound and compression.
No, not that kind of bunny.  The small, furry, long-eared, pudgy nose kind.

will post my impressions once i've got a few rides in.

Cool, which one did you get?  You may want to make sure that they send you the right size bushings.  Some measurements from your current shock might help.  For some reason mine came with the wrong ones. Seems like someone else here may have had the same problem.  It wasn't a huge deal, as they sent the correct ones out right away, just a little bit of a let down to have the thing in your hands and not be able to install it.

I have almost finished rebuilding my proflex 855. I too am looking at a Risse Astro 5. I do have doubts about spending $500 Aud to replace the rear shock! Should I prephaps abandon ship and buy a complete bike else where? mmmmm...........
All up I will spend prob $1000 to complete the rebuild. It seems a reasonable amount for my first mountain bike.

What shock did you eventually order ? How uch did it cost  blah blah blah.

That's a good bike/platform for a Risse Deano, just be sure the frame's fresh enough to allow a couple years usage of your investment in new componentry....

ohh i rebuilt my proflex 857...got a risse astro 5 for it...spent pretty alot on that thing...got a huge DH fork on it(8") mavic 321 front and rear( with marzocchi front hub 20mm and XT rear) Avid mech (6" front 8" rear) IRC Kujo 2.3 tyers and to top it off...got a black glitter powder coat...i`m calling it "midnight" .. hopefully getting it back from Strong Frame this friday... pics for everyone then..  :) I also am looking into a new Risse for my 856 it is still a great XC bike and I use it still. Please post a review after you get a few ride on it.

I love my Risse.  It's a Genesis (They are a little lighter than the Astro 5).  It's mounted on my 856.  The risse doesn't jump around like the ODS did.

Just in case anyone is wondering, a Risse shock can be used with the LTK on the 856.  The shock can take up to 300 psi (stated by Kevin risse).  I don't use the LTK all the time but it sure makes for a quick change now... just pump up the shock a bit more.  With my 160 lbs, I run the shock at about 260 psi with the LTK.

the plus is that Risse astro 5 is really easy to maintain  and rebuilt(not that it happens often) ...on and on a great shock!

the ltk used to require a spring of about 3x the weight  of the normal XC .  sadly, no more are left.  

I'll have to get one of these risse shocks and have a play - they are very light compared to the ODS (856)

well - i've had it for a few months now, but having said that it's been winter here so most of my riding has been on the road and relatively smooth single track, so i'm yet to really test it out on the rough stuff.
spring has just sprung and the race season is just round the corner - so by february i'll really know how it handles the knarly stuff.
anyway...
pros: light - very light compared to an nr2, you can feel the difference.
smooth - rides nice
rear end feels stiffer laterally
cons: the rebound i guess, sometimes it snaps back a little and kinda feels like it's topping out at the top of the rebound stroke. maybe heavier oil would fix this?
not sure - have to yet experiment.
i got the guys at risse to build it to my weight so that is not the problem. i do tend to run my suspension pretty firm though - maybe that has a bearing on this?
will keep you posted the more rides i get in...
