How can I tell by looking? What's the differences between them. I know the 856 has some extra welding. I just don't know where. A photo of the 2 would be really great. My 855 was a shop parts bike for awile before it was put back togeather to sell. Thanks for the help.

One difference that I know of is that there is a gusset above a weak spot on the drive side of the swingarm. If you look at the drive side, deraillieur cable port near the front pivot, there will be a small plate running above that cable port that helps tie in the 2 tubes. It is not on the other side.
If you don't see it, then it is an early swingarm. Some early swingarms buckled/cracked from the pedaling torque.
You might be able see it on Simon's faux bar.

can't check right now but I have a feeling my 855 has that weld - maybe it's a later 855?

I just looked at mine and it has the extra area welded on the top side.

There's another weird deal on these...
I have two 856's with different swingarm pivot bore centers on the frame.
One was bored in the center of the machined face and the other was off center. I think they changed the swingarm geometry a tiny bit to prevent hitting the downtube. Don't know for sure.

x56 swingarm will have a strut with a cone depression in the strut.....if that helps...of course you could have a x55 with a x56 strut..check the for sale thread, there may be some pics of x55 and x56 there that show any differences.Any differences will be detail, they are basically the same bike
