752 Headset diameter query
« on: December 25, 2006, 08:50:19 pm »
I've just bought a 752 frameset (yet to collect it) - what headset diameter does it have? My friend had one back in the day and I seem to recall it was 1 1/4" - am I right?

Also what sizes did the frame come in? Not sure what I've got yet...'cept it's white!

I'm not sure but I think my 853 was 1 1/8"
I would imagine the 752 would be the same
wouldn't the 752 of run a flexstem ?? does the 752
use a aheadset system or quill type (expander wedge)
?? Doesn't matter headset wise just curious.

This one has 1997 manitou suspension forks with a threaded headset. Only seen the photo so far - so can't say any more...

My 252 has a 1" steerer
My 853 has a 1 1/8" steerer
and my 952 has a 1 1/8" steerer, too.

But I have never heard of 1 1/4" steerers on a offroad proflex.

Far as I know, the only bikes that have used a 1 1/4" headtube were some older Gary Fishers and all Cannondales up until 3 or 4 years ago (when they switched to 1.5"). Klein also had a weird headtube size for a while in the very early 90s. Other than that, I think everybody made the gradual switch from the 1" to the 1 1/8" headtube in the early to mid 90s.

Great - that's a relief! It's bad enough that the seatpost is 27.0, without having to worry about the stem too!

Thanks guys.

I bought a headset on eBay labelled:
"Girvin Components Vector Dia Compe AHeadset".
I didn't even stop to consider what size it was as I assumed it would fit my XP-X/Vector II ..........until it arrived................it's a 1 1/4" !!

God Knows what it might have fitted from the Girvin Farm!
It'll be making a re-appearance on eBay in the near future!

I've just picked it up this morning and found out it's actually a 753 (I misread the number in the photo!) - in which case I assume it's a 1 1/8th headset but is the seatpost still 27.0 or has it now gone up to 27.2?

It's a lovely pearlescent white!

following on from the last message I have stuck a 27.2 post in and this is loose - so what size is it? 27.4 or some other bizarre size?

Don't know the size maybe best bet would be to
get the frame tube measured,
once you get the size and it turns out to be a rare
size you could try the USE shims which have a great
range of sizes http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=820
then get a 25.0 post to suit.

ahh, thanks, actually I have a USE 25mm seatpost I could use (excusing the pun!) although it's a bit short for me at 330mm, may try shimming that up. Cheers.

Update: my wife's bike happens to have a 28.0 seatpost and guess what - it fits! so that answers one question - however, I stuck a quill headset in that I'm sure is 1 1/8th and it doesn't fit... I think it may be 1 1/4" after all!! Could it even be 1.5"? Also what rear shock options do I now have given the elastomer is rock solid?

here is a photo:

IIRC the early first gen aluminium proflex frame was a 1-1/4" size, I have a 750 (1991) frame that is this size !
Old ones are always the best ones.

Try rapid descent - they have some kits for a 755, but might be able to cut one to the length you need.
