ive just been to the hospital to get a date for my hernia op and had the pre-op exam today while i was there. everything was fine till it got to my blood pressure, ill admit that i was a bit stressed while i was there but to get a reading of 175/115 whilst only having a pulse rate of 72 was a bit unnerving to say the least. is is possible to have that kind of bp? if so what happens when im hitting 180bpm at the top of a hill? sorry if this is totally off topic but i need advice. oh yeah the hernia op is next month if my bp is ok!! when i check it at home with my home monitor my bp is usually about 115/80, help!

I'd get it double checked - especially if it's usually normal at home. 175/115 is pretty high. (The 115 is actually more concerning than the 175). First thing I'd do is double check, then ask your doctor what to do about it if it's still high. I'd be surprised if they didn't try to bring it down a little before surgery, although it's not a requirement. Diet and exercise are usually first-line treatment for high BP, so look up a good low-sodium diet on the web. Most people on this forum get decent exercise, but if you don't, it would be a good idea to add some regular aerobic exercise to the regimen (like riding your Proflex more...) If it's real, BP that high can be a sign of other serious problems, or it can be an isolated thing. What I do know is that it puts you at risk for other things - heart disease, kidney problems, etc so keeping it low should be your top priority.
Man, this seems to be my day for long-distance diagnosing. Unfortunately, my mother is in the hospital in Shanghai (where my parents have lived for a year) with a very serious infection. They're still not sure what it is, but it sounds to me like a bacterial meningitis, and we're very worried that she may lose her life. She's already probably lost at least one foot, and her mental status is very confused. Life is fragile - don't take it for granted! She's only 56, and very healthy, so it could happen to anyone. The sad thing is, they were supposed to move back to the States this coming weekend!

Thanks guys. I'm flying to Shanghai tomorrow. Hopefully things will take a turn for the better. One can always hope. At this point, it's in God's hands, and the only thing we can do is pray. I appreciate the support here on the forum.
Jeff, I'll expect to hear good news from you by the time I get back...

yes Matt i spose yu may miss this bust the absolute best wishes for your mum and you and your family..56 shees h thats only a few years......
Jeff its normal for a person under stress to have an elevated blood pressure.
At my last checkup the nurse was very concerned, but was less concerned when i told her
1) I was about to start a new job
2) I had literally just been involved in a traffic accident
What is the family history in these matters, ussually the dominant factor aprt from smoking.
Best wishes everyone !

Hey Matno, I am really sorry to hear about your mother's illness. I am saying a prayer for positive outcomes for your Mom's bout with this illness. My thoughts are with you. It seems that once you get out in the deep water of life everything gets a bit fragile, but keep the faith we are all stronger than we think.

Hi guys. Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm happy to report that my mother has had a miraculous recovery thus far. I just got home from a week in Hong Kong where she was transferred to an intensive care unit last weekend (from Shanghai). Shortly after my arrival, she "came out of it" and was lucid and communicating well though weakly. After a couple of days on strong anti-biotics, it appears that she will recover fully! When I left her, she was begging to get out of the hospital (which was really almost like a resort, it was that nice). She'll need another few weeks of i.v. antibiotics, but I have every expectation that there will be no lasting effects. Even the areas of her feet and hands that the docs said were "gangrenous" look to be healing well (no numbness, good blood flow, go figure!) I think the only explanation here is that there were a LOT of people praying on her behalf.
Anyway, Jeff, I'm glad to hear that you were merely suffering a case of "white coat syndrome." Happens all the time. (Even happened to me the last time I had a physical, although in my defense, I did have a bad cold...)
