naive but still need some help
« on: June 25, 2006, 04:48:36 am »
On my "race" Pro~Flex the rear der. cable rubs on the seat tube (between the down tube stop and the swingarm) in such a way that I squeak, squeak, squeak...all the out and back.

What's the best (long-term solution) besides taking the whole cable out and installing a longer piece of housing???

I've yanked on it, trying to stretch it. Have thought of putting a small spot velcro patch on the seat tube, for the cable to rub against, but worry about pulling the paint off if I ever remove the patch.

BTW it is my fav bike at the moment

smileys are'nt working.....cheers

Simon

How about fitting an external O ring over the outer
cable housing at the cable to frame rub point, also apply a small patch of clear thin sticky back
plastic to the frame at the rub area (won't take the paint off when removed),

but for me I'd have to fit a longer housing.

glad your enjoying that bike.

What's wrong with installing a longer piece of housing? Actually, I'd only do that if it were causing a problem with shifting. For squeaks, I'd go with the velcro (or some other type of patch). There is NO WAY that would pull the paint off unless you've repainted it yourself using REALLY cheap paint. Another possibility would be to get a piece of tube and wrap it around the seat tube at that spot, but you'd have to hold it in place with a zip tie. You might consider one of those Lizard Skins headset protectors - they're neoprene and cost about $2 online. Just some thoughts, but I think the easiest would be the velcro patch. Don't worry about the paint unless you're bonding it on with superglue!

I reckon that the paint is already gone. I can see how the housing could saw right thru the seat tube.

Lizard Skins sells carbon patches like the ones that are used for chainstays. Maybe it would be slick enough to protect that tube and slide nicely.

On my XP-X (856) I cable tied the rear derailleur cable housing to the rear brake Hose (Maguras).

That stopped the paint rubbing off the seatpost.

As original (brand new), the bike had a number of clear plastic rub strip stickers where the cables were likely to rub. Some of these have peeled somewhat over the years , but they certainly didn't take the paint with them!

Terry...yes it was starting to "saw" through. Have a velcro patch stuck to the frame. I noticed the same thing on the downtube as well. So another patch there. I'll probably do the cables awhile down the road.

It's sweet with the CF riser bar and a used Speed V saddle..and a BELL.
