EVO Pivot Jiffy Lube w/ pics
« on: May 08, 2003, 10:45:44 am »
I edited OP's original 5-min pivot jiffy lube, added pics and details about pivot removal.  Let me know if there are errors.

thanks for looking.

No, not that kind of bunny.  The small, furry, long-eared, pudgy nose kind.

great work dt -

i am in awe of the professionalishness of your work -

that looks to be a keeper

i happened to notice in the original manuals that the cross bolt is to be torqued to 175 inch pounds and in the new online service manuals at the k2 site they bumped it to 250 (for the swingarm reinstallation process)

http://k2bikes.com/tech_library/service_manuals/98evo.pdf

"replaced.7.Reinstall the swingarm onto the frame. It helps to gently squeeze the swingarm dropouts together when sliding the swingarm into place.

8.Reinstall the pivot axles into the frame.

9.Tighten the pinch bolt that secures the threaded pivot axle to the point where the pivot axle can not spin.

10.Reinstall the main pivot bolt and torque to 250 in-lbs.

11.Make sure both pinch bolts are loose.

12.To adjust the pinch bolts properly, detach the shock from the swingarm. Hold the swingarm up and tighten the pinch bolts evenly. The pinch bolts should be tightened until the swingarm (with the rear wheel installed) falls slowly downward when released.

13.Reinstall the shock onto the swingarm. Tighten the lower shock bolt to 150 in-lbs."

the 250 seems more realistic and since my honey bought me a sears inch pounds torque wrench for my birthday that goes to 250 - that's where i set mine.  no noise at all from the joint since the change.

OP- I'll make those changes.  Thanks.

Matno, thanks.  I'm hoping for this (the final edited version) to go into the "How Tos" here, along side OP's originals.   Leaving it in files my get it lost from sight.

Good work, that's a great service manual.

A technique that I have found to ease reinstallation of the swingarm is to Superglue the quad rings in place. I can now quickly and without hassle install my swingarm.  [smiley=nod.gif] Has anyone else tried this? Also, what year is your diagram for? My '98 4000 has only one quad ring per side.

Phillip,

The pics are from the k2 tech library 98/99 carbon frame assembly.

Thanks.  I write a lot of scientific proposals, so the layout and typing goes fast.
