4500 noise
« on: March 26, 2006, 03:09:00 am »
Hi boys. Can anyone advise me how to stop the squeaking noise coming from the swingarm pivots of my 4500. In the past a drop of oil dripped on from above has cured it but I have read that vegetable or mineral oil or aerosol WD 40 will cause the bushings to swell so I'm now loathe to put anything on!
Any suggestions would be greatfull received. Thanks, Mac :-/

Read OP's jiffy lube in the files section,
warning only do one side at a time, should the s/arm move from its mounting point then your in for some fun (not),
then you would need to read up on my spreader system solution,
Oh just use good quality lube (grease) such as finishline etc.
Also should lubeing not cure the noise you may find a dropout has come loose in the s/arm,not uncommon.

I fought your battle, and conquered it. OP treatment kept the pivots quiet and smooth, but the culprit was squeaking chainring bolts and chainring interfaces. I applied blue locktite to them and no more squeaking.

Try penetrating oil on those places to rule them out. Also had squeaking cable ferrules. Wiggle the cable housings to see if they creak.

Hmmm, swelling of the bushings make sense. They could swell and prematurealy wear and get loose.

or you could just send it to me and you won't have to listen to that gosh awful racket anymore
(i'll even split the shipping with you)

OP

just kidding - be sure to check the bottom bracket lube and the cable housing junctions as they can make near the same sound when the swingarm moves and the cables move with it.
