I have a 98 Proflex 3000 and I blew through my Risse Terminator in less than 1 month.......it was still under warranty so they fixed it. I put the bike back together and next thing I know the bolt that holds the rear swing arm in place sheared off.......I'm putting the bike back together again with a new bolt and I plan to try it out tomorrow with ALOT less air pressure in the Risse ( I weigh 197lbs and set the air to 250lbs for min rear movement during work commute, bike can't hande it).............I suspect geometric issues................but I will try with the new air pressure and min compression and rebound dampening and see if this solves the problem..............

Any ideas or people with the same issues?

I bought a new bike as a result of lack of reliability of my new K2 setup with Risse Terminator rear .....Rocky Mountain ETS-X70.........

I'm surprised it works at all. The k2 3000 has a massive wheel travel: shock travel ratio and requires a really solid spring. I didn't know a risse could go up that high.

what was wrong with the original shock?

Hmmmm, interesting.

Same bike here, but i'm running a Cane Creek Cloud Nine (click on the link to my Gallery for pics).

Our 3000's use a 3:1 leverage ratio. That' means that for every 1" of shock travel you get 3" of rear wheel travel. This will differ slightly from frame size to frame size, but it's not that far off. What size is your frame?

I can only suspect that using THAT much air pressure in the shock might be causing you issues. I'd talk to Risse (which i'm sure you have?) and mention this to them. I can't help but feel that that is waaaaay too much pressure to be putting into an air shock with a 3:1 leverage ratio. If you like you suspension stiff then so be it - I can't tell you otherwise about what you prefer - but you might want to try to give the suspension a chance to do it's job.

Risse is a good company with quality products. I think you're not letting their product do it's job (not meant in an offensive way!). If you want the suspension to work less during your commute then you might want to consider a "platform" shock, something like a Manitou Swinger or Fox that have anti-bob characteristics. The idea behind my Cloud Nine and your Terminator is to keep the suspension as responsive to all/any input (rider, terrain or otherwise) as possible.

As for the sheared bolt - what material was it? Steel, Ti, aluminum? A bolt for that location should only be steel... maybe Ti - never aluminum. Also, are you talking about the main pivot bolt, or.... ?

I hope your RM doesn't suffer the same breakages as other's i've seen - it could be painfull. Hope you wear a jock when you ride it.

Thanks for your reply.............The original NR2 "blew out" and lost charge..........I read on here that Risse's work well so I called them and they said yes, they do..........so I took the plunge

Can anyone recommend a place for a rebuild on the NR2? ............it lasted for many years without a problem..............

Thanks for the info..........I plan to significantly reduce the air pressure like you suggest............down to @ 150 like it was set at Risse..........

The bolt was the main pivot bolt........and I suspect that this was all caused not by the Risse but by my desire for a firmer ride.............I will let the shock do it's job...........

Risse has been very helpful and is a good company to deal with..........definitely NOT a dig at them..........their product seems top quality and they stand behind it 100%

are many people using risse shocks on the K2 x000 bikes? or the 5500, 4500, Oz bikes that have the same geometry?

although the airshocks will be lighter - I think I'd prefer to have a solid steel spring for a 3:1 ratio.

It's worth mentioning that the Noleen shock can be easily fixed.

The main pivot bolt holds the bearing cups together, the bearing cups take most all the force. A stock bolt should not fail, IMHO. They are made of hardened steel. Where on the bolt did it fail?

There's a way to adjust the main pivot pinch bolts....did you overtighten those as well? What did you torque the main pivot to?....in inch pounds??

I had a Risse astro5 on my 4500 (now my son's and still running the Risse) apart from an internal blown oil seal its been perfectly fine,I've regually run this shock at over 260 psi with no problems,the 4500 suspension ratio I'm pretty sure is 2.7 to 1.

I suppose we need to find out more why this failed - quite a lot of the time it is a severe lateral force that breaks shocks. Shocks, by their very nature, shouldn't break on impact!

except for noleen nr-2's on the small 857's. I think they all broke at some point!

Okay I put the bike back together and 150lbs in the Risse is much to low.........I'll put it at around 200lbs( I weigh 195lbs)................although it handles much better with some give .........so I really like the way it handles now........much better..........the shock seems to work much better than before the rebuild..........Risse said that sometimes they get bad o-rings.........I replaced the main pivot bolt holding the bearing cups together (thanks for the lingo Carbon! [smiley=beer.gif]) with a really heavy duty bolt-the original bolt actually snapped inside one of the bearing cups...............This mornings commute was great............now I just need some time to build up some confidence with this bike and really see how it holds up.............

I'm in Northern Vermont and my local shop says they have a rebuild service............but after today's commute home I'm sticking with the Risse............I'll get the NR2 rebuilt as a backup for when the Risse is in for service.............

If you want a firmer rider to work I'd crank up the compression dampening. Don't put it all the way but may be 1 or 2 "clicks" from full compression. And keep the preload where it needs to be. And remember, the more compression you run, generally the less rebound you'll need. So you may want to back the rebound off a little. Just a suggestion. Of course you'll want to back the compression back to normal settings for offroad riding. My Fox Foats have lock out, so I get to cheat.
