Hey,

Was giving my bike the once over as it hasn't been riding that flash lately & think I've discovered a problem with the rear shock. [smiley=disbelief.gif]

I think it's a NR-4 with adjustable compression & rebound. Am I right?

Anyway with the spring removed she doesn't want to rebound, even if I play with the dampening. Am I correct in assuming that the nitrogen charge should make the piston rebound even without the spring?

Do you guys think I have a problem (other than using an antique shock)

What should I do from here? Try & get it recharged maybe??

PS- shock is 7yo and has never been serviced, just kept clean so has done well for it's lack of maintenance

PPS- I'm not responcible for the butchering marks on the spring preload ring!!! They're from my little brother getting over zealous with some vice-grips

From what I know, the shock should rebound when compressed and it being 7 years old sounds like it could use an overhauling

I don't think I'll shell out on the noleen service as once I've converted the price to Auzzie dollars I can get a new shock for the price.

I'm probably up for a new shock anyway, I've been toying with recharging it myself as I have a massive nitrogen tank at work, all I need is the knowhow and a filler kit.
Has anyone regassed one of these shocks before??
Am I right that the valve is hidden under the little screw in the piggy back part of the shock? I guess I need a needle valve to fit.

It's probably in need of new seals & Orings too. Maybe I should attempt disassembly first & see what I can do.

Does anyone know how to get these suckers apart??? :-/

your local m/cycle shop might be able to help you out with a place to do it,your aussie k2 distributor might be able to do it,the NZ distributor might do it or you could do it with my noleen recharge kit,assuming you will assure me you would send it back! .The nitrogen charge is about 200 psi.There is a snap ring immediately under the aluminium plate that the shaft goes through...I dont know how that plate comes off tho.....

The k2 dealerships over hear don't have a clue about noleen shocks- sadly! where abouts are you in NZ? I'm from up in the mountains at Staveley 30km south of Mt Hutt Ski field. But I'm over here in Melbourne for the $$$ to pay off my student loan!

Anyway, thanks for the offer to use your kit. Of course I would guarantee it's return & pay for all postage. But I'm afraid I'll need to regas the shock on a regular basis now it has lost it's charge, so I'm looking at building my own kit.

I have the nitrogen & a lot of gas hose at work, so all I probably need is a gas guage & regulator. What does your kit look like? Does it work with a needle valve? Any chance of posting a digital pic??

I've invested in this recharge kit off ebay and currently have my rear shock in exactly 18 different pieces on my desk. No nitrogen explosion on disassembly but I did get oil everywhere. [smiley=turtle.gif]

Do you think I should fill it with standard fork oil? Any suggestions with weight/viscosity???

My noleen WILL ride again!!!! [smiley=evil.gif]

(cause I can't afford it not to!!!)

I'm hoping I can substitue the seals and orings for aftermarket units from several industrial supply places.

Just uploaded a service instruction for noleen shocks in the file section.
Have a look inside.
Maybe it helps.
I wrote it myself cause I had to do a service on my shock and couldn't find any information to this subject.

I have a few ruined shafts because I wasn't using the right tools.
Also Is there is anyone here that could perform these rebuilds for a better price then Noleen.

How do you seperate the shaft from the bottom area where the rebound adjuster meets the shaft. I ruined my shaft on my NR-5 by using chanel locks on the shaft while I had the bushing area in an adjustable rench. The threads I am tring to seperate from the bushing area are situated where the red bottomout bumper is in the photo you see up top.
I will be servicing the shock completely maybe in a few weeks when I am free off work.

Is it really necessary to seperate those parts?

I thought you can change all seals by removing that tiny nut and shims on the top of the shaft.

yes thats the kit that i have got,and i think someone says that there O rings in the kit but i didnt see any in mine
Its even the same place I bought mine from years ago!
