What parts does RK008 include?
« on: July 13, 2005, 01:34:21 pm »
While I don't have a 98 EVO frame, the bolt that holds the bottom of the rear shock on my '99 K2 4000 recently sheared and both sides fell out.  Fortunately I walked the trail and found the Beveled nut with a piece of the bolt in it.  This "nut" doesn't typically come off when you take the shock off, but I think it was the only thing holding the shock in place until I dismounted and it fell out.

K2 doesn't carry part 16181 which is the bolt itself, but the RK008 EVO Pivot Rebuild Kit instructions includes torque specs for a similar bolt.  (15630)

Does the kit include this bolt?

I've made due with a Hex head 6x1x40, but I had to put a washer under the head and I'd rather a better fix if one is available.

I am not 100 percent sure that this is  aahigh tensile bolt but i am sure you can get a very similar bolt from any place that sells bolts etc.Sometimes a motorcycle shop might be a good place to try.

What the f... did you do with your bike???

You got a steal bolt on it and I'm riding a titan bolt for 5 years now or so. I often ride in the Alps with steep and rocky downhills and I didn't kill that bolt. It's not even curved.

And titan bolts have a lower maximum shear moment, so it should break much earlier than your steal ones.

Please describe what you did.

And to answer your question.

Don't spend that much money by buying that original kit. Just go the next general store and beg for one bolt from which they have thousands.
It should cost nothing. Really nothing.
Or go to your neighbour who is a DIY. He should have such a bolt. The only important thing to look for is, that the threads are not going through. It must be a bolt and not a screw. Otherwise the threads will work their way through the aluminum of your shock joint.

I think if I go out in my to my workshop I will find hundrets of such bolts.

Relax 252... it was probably a combination of a weak spot in the bolt and WAY too much torque.

iliv2k2... This is a great place to use more threadlocker and less torque. Try getting a Loktite Blue Stick. It's as simple as a chapstick and works miracles on bolts like this.

Cheers,
Will

the kit does NOT include the bolt.

[smiley=beer.gif]

replacements are easy to get be sure to match the strength or hardness of the OEM

Geez 252....   :o

From the part of the bolt I found, it did appear to have a defect.  All I've started doing new are bunny hops.  I don't even do drops any further than 2'.  Perhaps it was too much torque, I did just rebuild the pivot two months ago, so perhaps I tightened it too much when I put the shock back on.

Thanks for the help.  The bolt I did find is completely threaded.  It was the only 1mm bolt Home Depot carried that was long enough.  I'm assuming your def of bolt is smooth for the first 35mm from the head with only 5mm of threading.

That is the way mine is. You will be fine with that bolt.
