Just had my first ride on my 856 project

Pretty damn happy
first impressions,its very quiet, smooth,and lively,
sharp steering,fast climber,comfortable,I'm able to run the saddle more central on the post unlike as far back as possible on my large 4500,
unfortunatly the ground was a bit slippery so unable to push it to my limits but it has impressed me,
I didn't have the sag set correctly as I normally ran my 4500 stiff at the back I set this the same,I'm sure it will benefit running around 10mm shock sag,I only used around 25mm of shock stroke out of the 35mm available.
On another plus note nothing broke creaked or came loose,
had some issues setting the front mech (der) as things settled but no shifting problems or thrown chain,all sorted now.
Thanks to Sprucey (who's off again sailing) for sorting
me a lovely FSA Ti B/B and the very difficult to get
XT 8 speed (yep still running 8 speed through choice)

Forgot to mention that it got many admiring glances
and a lot of other mtber's enquiring what it was
and impressed with its weight and design.

what's your guess as to why your seat is more over the post on this 856 vs carbon. is your top tube and stem/bar setup pretty similar?

Bill good question,I'm not sure,
just had a quick measure the top tube lengths are
near as dammit the same,seat post angles look the same,I'm using the same bars stem post and saddle,
so that leaves the chainstay length,
the 856 is much shorter so the cranks are further
back,I would of thought that would of meant I'd
want my saddle further back,but no its very comfortable set centrally,I had tried this position on
the 4500 but my leg angle to the cranks just never
felt right and I always reverted to the fully back
position,so it must just be down to the chainstay length,unless anyone else has any other ideas.

Terry,
according to the trusty bathroom scales (not the best so just a quide)
just under 25lbs fully built with pedals.
still some Ti bolts to get in the future but thats about it,its much lighter than I thought it would come
out,I was expecting 27ish lbs.

what's funny is the chainstay length is shorter on the Oz than the 8/957

style bikes by about 2mm, don't know about your 856 superbike, though...436mm vs 438 is what i found

Hmmmmmmmmm
Bill I just measured my wife's standard 856 just
using a tape measure and the chainstay length
came out at 418ish mm
the 4500 is claimed on K2 bike geometry file
to have a chainstay of 436mm (checked my son's its
about right)
this leaves a 18mm difference
so out of curiosity I checked how far forward
I've moved my saddle,its 20mm.

On another note the 8/957's have a different
s/arm (longer and carbon)to the 855/856 and the pivot point is mounted in a similiar
position to the 4500,ie further forward,so I'm assuming the chainstay length of a 8/957 is longer than a 855/856 but I'm not certain.

Jinder,you or anyone else who'd like to try it

that's a big dif in chainstay between the 856 and my 857 and Oz!!!

curious to find out if you like the 856 Simonize version better than your Oz Simonize after thorough testriding.

maybe you shoulda worked for Pro~Flex and been Bob G.'s right hand man!

Just got in from my 3rd ride on it now,
much better conditions,
and all I can really say

now I've sorted the front mech,
found the best sag (11mm at shock),
found the best rebound setting for my style of riding,
One thing I noticed there's no brake jack (none that I've noticed),
eats up the bumps,just stay seated and pedal,
fast bumpy down hill just hover off the saddle and let the suspension do the work,
I'm just really impressed,I've only riden it at our local park on a short MTB track,its more an intence sprint track, 3.5miles of very demanding short steep hills,loads of single track with many roots to deal with,for this type of track I think it deals with it better than the 4500,
next test will be the long haul ride to see if it can match the 4500 in the long distance rides,wheather it can match the 4500 as a comfortable do most things ride I've yet to see,

Thanks to Jinder, I have a 957 on the way that may get a clamp on version of your linkage. From what I have seen you do, I now have a plan.
