need photo of 853 rear brake system
« on: April 25, 2005, 03:29:31 am »
Hi Folks!

I'm just building up a 853 frame as U can see in my gallery.
Now a little prob.
The rear brake seems to be asymmetric.
As I don't know how to fix there a old DX Canti Brake I need some photos of the rear brake assembly.

Please post it.

Thx in advance!

Along time ago I has an 853 and now I'm racking my brains trying to remember how the rear brake worked, one thing I do remember was that the inner wire was anchored on the s/arm and when the brake was applied the outer cable moved and applied the brake,I can't remember the rest [smiley=worry.gif],another thing the brake was pretty rubbish even in its day.

The 853 used a funky bellcrank to pull a cantilever straddle cable.  Not worth the material it was machined out of.

Better solution is to just run a V-brake style cantilever in conjunction with a "Travel Agent" pulley.  If you're levers are non-V, use the cable pull "amplification" feature of the pulley.  If you're levers are V compatible, use it as a straight pulley.  The pulley keeps the cable from hitting your left heel like a typical noodle would do.

That's how my 853 is currently set up...and I just raced it at Sea Otter!

Thx!

And does anyone have a pic of it?
And I don't want to use V-brakes as it is an old schooler. It's not for riding every day or to go dirt biking. It's just for cruising and of course to stand in the living room.
So it's got to be original and so it's got to have old canti brakes. And as my frame had no original brake assembly as I bought it, I've got to find out how it was performed that days.

PLEASE GIMME A PIC OF THE REAR BRAKE ASSY!!!!

I'll do you one better...how'd you like the actual bellcrank part?  Just let me know...if you pay for the shipping, it's yours.  I'll even include a photocopy of the drawing in the manual that shows how it's set up.
(I'm pretty sure it's in the manual...if not, I'll just take a quick picture with it on the bike).

Just make sure your swingarm still has the pivot post for the bellcrank...if the previous owner cut it off, you'll have to use my previous suggestion.

Yep! A pic of that bellcrank part would serve me well!

And yep, I'm interessted to get that part from you.

And yes! I would pay for the shipping of course.

I just have to know if it fits with my bike.

Just let me know how to handle this.

I'll take a quick look for the manual when I'm out in the garage tonight.  If the picture I remember is in the manual I'll see about scanning it and sending it to you.

Does your swingarm have a post with an internal thread (like a brake arm post) mounted near the brace?  It would be on the non-drive side of the bike and is where the bellcrank part pivots.

If that's there...then we'll talk about getting that part to you!

I'll never ever ride Vs on that bike!!!!
It has to have Cantis!

And that if I'll have to bite that part out of a piece of aluminum with my own teeth!!!!

And Tom said he's got that part in his trash box and he will give it to me if I pay for the shipping.
Well I'm willing to pay for it, but Tom is a little bit missing.

My apologies for going AWOL...things have been a bit busy here lately.

Do you still want me to send it from the US or will it be easier for you to get the part from Natas in Holland?

Just let me know...

Again, sorry about the delay,
Tom A.
