Play in Parallax Hub
«

Hi,
More nasty grinding, clonking noises on the XP-X (856) that don't seem to be originating from my Knees!
Looks like there is some sideways slop in the back hub, it's a Parallax (original '97 item). Basically the entire back wheel has got some play in it that's definately not the QR skewers. It makes some clonking noises when free-wheeling or pedalling. [smiley=doh.gif]
Anyone know if the bearings can be rebuilt or do I need a new hub and consequent wheel rebuild...?
Or do I let the dreaded LBS loose on it...?
Honestly, nothing seems to last 5 minutes these days, huh, only 8 years wear out of it ........
....

Colin,
Is that Parralax hub the "Silent Hub". I had a "Silent Hub on my 97 Beast. It made a crunch sound on a climb, and then seized. Ripped the derallier right off the swing arm into the spokes.

It certainly isn't silent now!
Yeh it's about the same vintage, so possibly.....
Blimey! I'm not going to hang around replacing it if it can do that much damage!
Thanks

Those hubs need to be repacked with grease because they are not sealed. Sounds like it too late and they are already trashed.

I think that's a simple cup and cone hub with loose ball bearings.
If the bearing faces of the hub itself and the cones on the axle are OK then buy some BBs from the LBS, repack wit grease and re-set the lock nuts.
You can buy axles and cones as spares but they may no longer be available for these hubs. (They weren't expensive hubs in the first place so you have done well!)
Otherwise it's new hubs on your existing rims or complete new wheels.

Ohhh nooooo! Can anyone confirm that Parallax hubs are indeed a conventional bearing configuration?
I always thought they were sealed cartridge, but never checked to be absolutely sure.
I just checked my front by freewheeling it - time for a polish of the races and some new BB's. I'm afraid to check the rear. [smiley=disbelief.gif]
Also, how can you tell if it's a "Silent Hub"? Besides the obvious - part number anyone?

Hey, all the feedback I got above, confimed it was a loose bearing hub and the bike shop certainly didn't put a new hub on for a Tenner!
On the plus side, it lasted 8 years and I've done plenty of miles.

"Silent Hub" circa '95, to the best of my knowledge was a Shimano rear hub designed to eliminate the clicking associated with the rachet. They were marketed to law enforcement in the US.
On my 97 beast, the rear parralax hub had an expanding sleeve llike a clutch. When it exploded, the whole wheel was replaced under warranty with an XT hub on a Sun Ringle rim.
The LBS showed me an array of shattered alloy and composite pieces, and explained what happened and why they were getting away from them, so it would ot happen again.
I really don't know how to tell from the outside if it is silent hub.

Got it, Colin. I must have misread it the first time. Apologies.
Terry - Law Enforcement bike application, huh? Very interesting. Sneak up on the bad guys-type stuff.... or the competition. Cool.
