THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME I POST THIS ADVICE!!!!

Go to your local "spring" place, take your old spring, they will wind whatever you like at a good price too.

hi Kiwi - THANKS  [smiley=diaper.gif] [smiley=nod.gif]
[smiley=beer.gif]

As ya know I do all my bike mods on the cheap so I am a little dubious about getting one made custom, when someone in the UK might have one for under a £10. Surely to have one made it would be nearer £30. (since new speed springs used to cost £40 - well from memory I think this was the cost).

Anyway - won't find out unless I check it out so cheers, will let you know how I get on - now where to look. hmmmmmm

i found my Local spring placewhen op sent our trans pacific crosslink with a couple of springs of unknown rate.I looked in the yellow pages and found there was a spring manufacturere just down the road from my work place. He measured and maybe weighed my(OP's) springs and gave me two printouts. At that time he said he could wind anything even a progressive. It may be more than 10 quid but dont forget you are cutting out probably two middlemen AND you are getting exactly what you want.He will even wind what he would call overated(prolly all mtb springs are overrated and save some weight!...

Kiwi,

Hat's off to you. Sure enough. There's a spring winder right here in town.
Minimum order is $80 USD so I'll pass. Couldn't I just get a spring from some aftermarket folks for less that that? There must be a way...

Check out the yellow pages,
I'm also in the south of England
give these a try
Alliance spring
020 7607 3767
Morris spring
0121 522 4720
Simpson springs
0118 9786573
Also try CVI
          TFtuning
          and Mojo
they all do custom spring windings.

Dear Kiwi, or anyone else who might know...

Does a 200#/in spring compress 1" under a 200# load?

Is this what is referred in shorthand as a "200lb" spring?

Thanks,
Will

No.
The 200lb refers to the amount of force required to move it,
if a spring is marked 200x1 this means it requires 200lbs of weight to move it and to be used with a shock with 1" or less of shaft travel any more travel and the coils would bind together before full stroke is achieved (very bad).

ummm i thought that the spring rate was expressed in lbs per inch,so to me a 200 spring would be 200 lb per inch..simon does have a point though the spring travel must suit your shock, which is why you need to take your old spring to the winders(if you did go that route)Correct me if i am wrong tho simon!

Whhhhhaaaaaat?

They have the sag reference all wrong. If the travel is 1.55 inches(39.37 mm) and the sag is 51 mm, then the sag would blow right through the travel.

Phew, had me perplexed for a while.
