Thoughts on trainers...

Hello all...
I was considering getting a trainer for the upcoming winter months. My debate is a wheel driven vs a rim driven trainer. I am not really familiar with either. I know I'd have to get a rear slick to minimize vibration with the wheel driven models. The main disadvantage I see is if I wanted to do real riding and needed to change out the tires frequently.
With the rim driven trainers, I can imagine the main factor for smoothness and minimal vibration is keeping the wheel true. If I wanted to ride elsewhere, I wouldn't need to change out my tire.
Is there appreciable wear on the rim due to the contact force with the little driven wheels? I'm sure that the forces and heat generated by the brake pads are considerably more; however, brakes are only used only periodically.
Any thoughts or ideas?

I'm curious. Does the rim driven trainer work with disk specific rims?
