Wow... I retract my statement. Apparently www.go-ride.com carries the Foz Vanilla DHX 5.0 shock for $399.00 USD. I think that is a very acceptible price, compared to the Avy DHS, El Jefe, 5th Element, and Manitou Swinger.

Well, it might be time to pull out the VISA!

Looked at that website. Very nice shock. And is comparable to the others in price. What size ranges do the Fox shocks have?

Unfortunately, I still don't think "comparable to others in price" is a reasonable price. I paid $125 for my Stratos Helix Pro, and it barely felt like a good deal. $100 for my Risse Astro 5 felt a little better...

Shocks are just too pricey for me I guess. Not that I haven't spent a lot of money on them...

While I totally agree with you about prices, bike parts are getting ridiculously priced. You can spen over $500.00 on brakes for your bike... I mean thats more than most brakes on cars.

But, I just meant that compared to the Other shocks in its class, like tha Avalanche DHS which is $550.00, its price at $399.00 is not that bad.

I am probably going to get the Stratos El Jefe (Standard) w/ remote resivioir, its only 349.00 and near the same thing as the Avy. It is a lot better price than the 455 for the El Jeffe Sr. which adds compression adj. which i can totally live with out.

Bikesmart also can get you a DHX.  I think I paid about $370, including shipping.  Mine is a 7.875 x 2.25, good for about 6" on an Evo... [smiley=laughing.gif]

I have to agree with Matno, that's a whole heap of money for a shock. I don't have any problem with the way my evo handles with a van r. I have never thought there was that  much 'bob', or problems associated with braking. I think I would rather put the $400 towards a new [or used] frame or bike that is spec'ed with 5th/spv/dhx or whatever the manufacturer decided is the right shock, I reckon you end up paying a lot less that way.Anyone got a Bullit with a 5th element that they want to sell me?

I bought a Fox Vanilla RC 8.75" x 2.75" on eBay for my 5000.  It sounds like people are pretty happy with their 8.5" shocks so I figure that an extra 1/4" shouldn't make too much difference.

What do you guys think, is an 8.75" going to be ok?  I have the original 8.25" Smart Shock on there now.

Looks like the extra 8.75 inch x 2.75 travel over the 8.5 inch x 2.5 inch travel puts it all at the extension of the stroke. In other words, it should bottom out at the same i2i as the 8.5 shocks. Given enough sag, the bike could ride well also.

Don't know if it matters to you, but there are internal bumpers that isolate top out. Maybe it could be disassembled and fitted with a thicker/extra bumper.

Presently kicking around new rear shock options. I would like to go to an air shock. Fox float rl ? that fits right ? 8.5 I2I, correct?

Was'nt there a shock fit table on tthis site somewhere?

Still waiting for the Rock Shox Pearl lightweight replacemnet for mine. I took my swinger off the other day, 1150gm's. Hopefully , the Pearl will be 350gms, so a good weight saving , if it works .

Ok, this is going to get a bit technical, but I'm fussy, and I talk in metric.  My 5500c calls for only 8mm of of sag i the rear (which isn't much).  Now the stock shock was 209mm long, and the Fox Float RL I have is 200mm long.  The adapter I made had to be long enough to work.  But that turned out to be good, because the Fox wants to run 13mm of sag.  So, by effectively making the shock longer I was able to run 13mms of sag but put the actual ride height of the bike right back to stock settings.  To make it easier to visulize the stock shock set with 8mm of sag would be 201 mm long with you sitting on the bike.  With my set up running 13mm of sag with a 15mm long adapter, and you sitting on the bike the shock would be 202mm long.  I really should run 14mms of sag, actually.  I just figured that out. Opps.  
Actually a 8.5" shock would work out to be the same.  You could just bolt it on, run 14mms of sag and be good to go, if it fit.  My adapter helped make mine fit, so the shorter shock worked for me.  But longer shocks just wouldn't make sense because it would be too much of a compromise between keeping the geometry happy, and the shock happy.
