856 rear end, HELP a newbe!
« on: July 05, 2004, 06:41:59 am »
I just got a 856 world cup frame (Med) for free!
And it has never been used!

One problem! Its missing the swingarm(s) in the rear!

Does anyone know were I can get these parts.

I did find a 955 (19 inch) frame with these parts, will they fit on a 856?

Also what frame is better the 856 world cup or the 955 or the animal?

Just found an animal frame (Med) too (shaped like an 856)...it would suck to have to buy a frame just for the rear swingarm!

The 955 swingarm will fit it has the same part number,
I believe the 955 although the same frame as the 856 was made with a higher quality tubing.
But if your 856 is one that doesn't have the access hole through the tube above the b/b for the old style canti brake cable to pass through then I'd use the 856.
If they both have this hole use the 955.
Doesn't really matter which you use though there both great frames.

Does anyone have a picture of the access hole through the tube for the brake cable?

Mine has one little hole in the bracket for the swingarm.

The 955 has that one plus a big hole in the tube above the b/b that a black plastic thing goes threw!

Is the big hole for the brake cable?

Thats the one the big hole, the early 856 also had this, the later 856 didn't,apparently the one's with this hole can break, obviously running the frame without the hole would mean removing the plastic guide from the swinging arm.

Don't spend any money till you figured out how much a frame with shock is going to cost you.

You can get a more modern frame with shock for under $300 at Ediscount or JensonUSA.

Well, in spite of brand loyalty and all, there are probably a lot of newer designs that are at least as good if not way better than the 856 in the 3" travel category. I'd say the razorback is probably an improvement (with equally limited rear shock choices!) if you're looking for a lightweight racing type bike (which a 3" travel bike should be). Trek, Cannondale, Giant, Specialized, and just about every other manufacturer has a bike that fits that category and has newer, improved shock technology. The question is, what can you find in the same price range? Probably not much, many of them can be found (frame only) for pretty cheap if you're willing to buy used. Keep an eye on ebay for a few weeks and you're bound to come up with a deal. Also check out ediscountbike, who often has deals on old, unused K2 frames.

Well I got an Animal frame with a rock shox on it now, but I still have the other 856. They both say world cup on them and they are the same size and shape, so my guess is that they are the same frame! If they are not please let me know.
So if they are the same frame and are made the same, the one with out the big hole is the one I should use.....the 856......But the Animal looks better (color wise, but that is just paint and is easily changed!).

Thanks for all the help
