Nice Response from Risse
« on: July 10, 2008, 08:57:43 am »
Hello all,

I just thought I'd pass on the response I received from Risse regarding new dampers for the 856 (but presumably the information applies to many other ProFlex/K2 bikes)...

Doug,

Thanks for your e-mail.  We offer front and rear replacement air shocks for the 96 Pro Flex bikes.

For the front Girvin fork, the Genesis damper is available.  The part number is 50173, suggested retail $198.00.
http://www.risseracing.com/applications/images/girvin.jpg

For the rear suspension, we offer The Genesis damper, The Astro-5 damper, and The Terminator Damper.  The Genesis Damper is an air shock with oil damping.  The damping is set internally when the shock is assembled, but the air pressure can be adjusted externally.  The Genesis retails for $198.00 p/n 50176.  The Astro-5 is an air shock with a five position external adjustment lever.  The lever goes from a soft setting to a stiff setting for climbing, and eliminating pedal induced bobbing.  The Astro-5 retails for $298.00 p/n 50176-5.  The Terminator is an air shock with two damping adjustment knobs.  The compression and rebound adjusting knobs each have six positions.  The Terminator retails for $350.00 p/n 50176-T.

Please visit our web site for info on the replacement air shocks.

http://www.risseracing.com/proflex.shtml

You can order the shocks directly from us.  When you are ready to order a shock, send us an e-mail with your shipping address, riding weight, and payment method.  We accept Visa, Mastercard or PayPal.  Attached is a picture of the Genesis Damper to fit your 856 frame.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Kevin

I've had a Genesis and an Astro-5 in my time and can recommend them both.

Not to put a dampner on it, but my post purchase emails have yet to be answered.

Contact before purchase was excellent, however i think i may have an "issue" with the rear shock, ive emailed to enquire whether its a fault or just something that happens with these shocks and ive yet to get a reply.

not a good sign, if i do have a genuine fault on a brand new shock, i guess thats the down side of internet dealing.  (mind you sometimes you have no choice, most shops dont even know what a proflex is, let alone have parts for them!)

Andy.

Had a similar Risse experience.  They were more than happy to help answer potential sales questions.  When it came to follow up questions after purchase, not so much.  I had to call them directly to get anyone to assist.  Eventually resolved my issue on my own.
Jury still out on the product.  Hope to get it up and working fully this weekend.

if you get the shock pictured for the x56 you are suposed to also get the "freedom plate" too.I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THE X57 SHOCK WITH TAPER SHOULD FIT THE X56 too,but have never had that confirmed .

my Noleen NR4 which was off an 857 fit straight into my 855 no problem, so would have thought 856 OK.

So I'm not really considering a Risse for an immediate purchase, but I'm curious...what is the "freedom plate"? The shock as pictured from Risse won't fit directly on the 856 frame? It looks like it should, because it has the Allen bolt bottom fixture and the eyebolt hole at the top. What else is needed? There's an 855 frame on eBay right now (with a Risse rear) and it looks to fit well. Just wondering...

The freedom plate is used as a spacer/holder on top of the Strut and Splitt Collet ( See image diagram Item # 6) http://idriders.com/proflex/resources/97_spc657_strut.pdf
I recently installed the Risse Genisis on my 856. It wasn't a completely smooth install, but once I got everything lined up, it did fit everything together nicely.

the x56 bikes have a cone shaped hole in the strut to match the cone shaped collett on the end of the shock. The x55 biks had a flat top on the top of the strut so the end of the risse shock mated straight to it(or original girvin mcu shock). The freedom plate is basically a big flat thick washer which covers the cone shaped hole in the strut. As we have discussed before, and here I think the cone shaped shock end would be better. Some X55 bike may have been retro fitted with the x56 strut

But I thought the cone-shaped collett could be removed from the top of the strut? Couldn't one just remove that and then install the Risse right on top of the strut?

Ah, so if the collett is removable on my strut it might indicate that my strut is earlier? That makes sense, since Callum indicated that the "Factory Test" writing on the top tube means the frame is an early 856 frame. Even if I had to create the "freedom plate" I think I could crank one out on my Unimat.

Thanks!

the cone shaped collet can be removed (maybe) from the shock but that still leaves you with a bloody big hole in the top of the strut istself, right where the shock is trying to mate with the strut
