Carbon swingarm pivot bonding?
« on: June 14, 2004, 10:26:58 am »
Has anyone had to re-bond the aluminum part of the pivot back into the carbon swingarm?  My left side aluminum pivot that was bonded into the carbon has come loose.  Noticed a problem when under hard accelleration or climbing a hill by the right crank whacking the right side of the swingarm as I was standing on the left crankarm.  The added torque pulled the swingarm to the right causing the strike.  I found which one was loose by just pushing and pulling slightly from side to side the swingarm while looking at the pivots.

If so, what is the best bonding material to use.  I was thinking of a 10 or 20 minute epoxy.  Slow enough to work with and clean up excess yet quick enough to not be down for more than a day or two at most.

Also, does anyone have any spare carbon swingarms that fit the carbon frame?  That is the style swingarm I have put on the K2-900 that I stripped and polished and then built up.  Has been a good project other than the swingarm pivot coming apart.

Thanks Steve

I saw your post on topica but having trouble replying there,Scotts reply on there works a treat, rebonded 3 dropouts in my old carbon arm (now using an AL one) very easy permanent repair,I used Devcon 5 Minute Epoxy (this was recommended to me on this site) they also do alonger cure time if you prefer,no worries you'll soon have it back on the trail,
Simon.

Well, I used Devcon's 30 minute epoxy as it had a stronger rating by 1000psi over the 5 minute version.  Got it bonded back in with no problems, just have to regrease all the pivot pieces and seals and put back together again.  Will let you know after the weekend how she held up.

Thanks,

Steve

The same thing happened to mine - but it split completely off while riding CBC.

IFO rebonded it at his body shop and it holds great now.

Mind you, I did retire the proflex after that incident.  It was time.

Update on the rebonding of my swingarm.  It failed. >:(  I decided to contact K2 just to see what would happen, they wanted me to send it in.  That swingarm I had was a strange one indeed.  They said they hadn't seen one like it.  It appears that it was from the 97 prototype carbon setup.  So they sent me a warranty replacement. ;D

Got the replacement and found that my flanged pivot bearings were too wide. ::)  The old swingarm used the same pivot axle and bearings that the 957 did.  Called K2 back and discussed with them the problems I had run into with getting the carbon swingarm on the 99 evo frame.  They asked how I had managed to use the older pivot setup in place of the needle bearings in that frame.  Since I did no modifications to the frame, they are sending me all the parts I need to properly set up the needle bearing pivot to properly support the carbon swingarm. ;D

Kudos to K2 Warranty and Tech support for getting me all fixed up for almost NOTHING!!!! :o ;D

Update on Swingarm Failure.  Rebonded.  Failed within about a week.  >:(

Decided to try my luck with K2 and see what would happen.  [smiley=worry.gif]  They asked me to send it in and they would check it out.  Was hoping to hear from them while I was on vacation.  No word. [smiley=blankstare.gif]  Called them when I got back and they had been stumped by the swingarm.  Discussed it with them and let them know where it was bought and we figure it was probably a prototype for the evo frame design back in 97.   :o Because of that, they sent me a brand new swingarm. ;D

Got the swingarm this last weekend and to my dismay, the pivot bearings I had in the old swingarm were too wide. [smiley=disbelief.gif] Called K2 again today and discussed with them what was going on and found that the newer swingarms were set up a bit narrower than they were in 97.

Also discussed a slightly different problem.  I actually was going to have a 2mm gap between the swingarm and frame?!  So we discussed what I had done to make the other swingarm fit on the 99 evo frame using the older pivot system instead of the needle bearings.  I had tried to get parts through a bikeshop to use the needle bearing setup, but they couldn't get all the parts.  Since I actually hadn't modified anything on the frame, they are now sending me ALL the proper parts to properly set up the needle bearing pivot! ;D

Kudos to K2 Bike Warranty and Technical support for helping get me set back up again at very little cost to me! [smiley=laughing.gif]

I guess a person can sometimes get good results from Tech Support and Warranty!  I know I am happy!
