disco monkey weight tips

I've recently bought a new 2002 disco monkey ex stock - great bike but a little heavier than I expected. Tips the scales at 35 lb, compared to my friends Oz-m at around 30. Mostly use it for xc single track and light downhill/freeride. Would like to cut the weight down a little to make the climbs a bit easier and for a bit more XC speed, but without compromising strength for downhill and drops. A lighter wheelset that would probably be a good start. What other sort of modifications have people done?

I dont really know what comes 'stock' in this bike, since I built mine from a frame, but I would say......a long travel (light weight) fork, like a psyloSL, or the new manitou Nixon, or the minute, and get an air shock to save weight in the back, but at the end the bike climbs good but descends wonderfully!! so deal with it! with a smile in your way down!

the most useful wt saving will be the wheels and tires. My evo probably weighs about the same and I am actually making it heavier because I'm fed up of trashing parts and want to know that the bike won't fall to pieces on landings. I was thinking of a lighter seat but have decided to stick with chromoly rails because i bent my current [cheapo redline seat] on flat landing. I am using a marzocchi freeride sl air which is light for a freeride fork and is great for drops.
It seems that 35lb is the wt most of the new freeride/trail bikes that are coming now

I've now replaced the standard wtb dual duty / deore wheelset with Mavic 317 / deore - (still running the standard Geax Blade 225 tires), replaced the k2 grab bag seat (480 wopping grams!) with titanium rail wtb SST 2k (cheap at $29 from Greenfish Sport), and the 500g K2 stem (makes a very good paperweight) with an Easton EA70. Also upgraded disks to hayes comp with 180mm front rotor. Virtually nil cost as I managed to sell most of the old parts. Result is that weight is now reduced from 35 to 31 pounds with no appreciable sacrifice in strength. I now have my dream machine that flies up the hills and tackles anything in its path! Bring it on!
