Vanilla RC bushing length?
« on: February 14, 2004, 02:45:41 pm »
I am planning on installing an 8.5" Fox Vanilla RC on my XL Disco Monkey. I imagine I could get the bushings from Fox. Anyone know the proper dimensions for the upper bushing? Thanx

the internal diameter of the bushing is fixed by the bolt, the external diameter by the internal diameter of the eyelet and the length will be the same as your existing bushing. So the only variable is the id of the fox eyelet.

Check the files section.  I u/l a schematic for a Vanilla RC bushing for a 7.875 i2i.  Should be the same, all you need to get is some nylon bushings to support the shock from moving side to side.  See pictures in the gallery and you can see the nylon bushings.

I just ordered the same thing from FOX. For my Disco Monkey. the top bushings or "reducers" as Fox calls them, the total space between the frame should be 39 mm and the bottom will be 26mm. They only have ones that are in the ball park, something like 39.9 and 26.9, I forget. I had to grind or sand a MM off the total distance to make them fit just right. Give them a call and give them those measurments and they'll set you right up! I just did this the other day. It only took two days to get here too. The number you want to call is 1-800-369-7469. Good Luck!

I measured the original upper which is 31mm. The Fox RC measures 33mm @ the widest point inserted into the frame. With the frame spread to 35-36mm seemed like plenty of clearance even if my main pivot were loose. 39mm seems a tad high as the frame mount would have to be opened 8mm vs. 4mm.

Keen,
That sounds about right.  The head of the shock
(between the frame rails) is 1".  I spread the rails apart, test fit the shock, then continued spreading and tesing until it looked like there was "decent" clearance between the shock and the frame.  The shock rotates very slightly when the suspension compresses so I didn't want it to touch.  (I think mine ended up approx 1-2 mm per side clearance).
I then filed the bushings to make them fit the new width.  The uppers required a lot of work, but the lowers practically dropped right in (hand filing).  My only problem was the lower mount.  The bolt diameter vs the ID of the bushing is a little sloppy.  I ended up making a shim from an aluminum can to remove the slop.  I'll try to get some pictures up showing my installation...

I called Fox today & they have either a 35mm or 38mm. I will probably end up buying both sets ($5 a set) I am pretty confident the 35mm will work. I hate taking a file to bushings as I have "crooked eyes" and no lathe.

Sorry it's been so long, but I got some pics posted of the shock fitting on the frame, along with the clearance of the head within the mounting rails...
