Carbon

I got back into biking a year ago, I am finally a carbon crosslink owner.  I remember when the first girvins came out and the idea rocked me - shame it took them so long to get it working, and when they did the gave up on it.  Anyhow, I'm not exactly sure which forks I now own and have a couple of questions.

The legs are carbon, with yellow mounts either end.  The shock is a noleen, but does'nt tell me which.  The coil preload is adjustable, and at the bottem there seems to be another adjustment (which seems to have no noticable affect on the forks performance) with a locking ring.  Hopefully someone can tell me what the are, and how old they are.

Most impotantly - I started to fit the forks using your usefull manual - thanks - its nice when the internet is actually useful.  Its the critical distance that is the problem.  If I follow this, I am left with a mear 10mm of steerer above the top clamp.  No room for a stem.  I guess a previous owner has disregarded this and hacked off the steerer, or a quill stem has been used.  By reducing the critical measurement such that it fits together, the fork still operates.  From analysis, I think changing this slightly changes the J-path, but does not jam or stress the linkages.  I am hoping there are some answers out there.....am I alright as is, do I need a new steerer, is the use of a quill stem possible - are the diameters correct, can the steerer be extended.

other qus, which service kit do I need and where can I get one.  And what is the dealeio on shocks, which are best for what.

Thanks
Nic
