Standard QR vs. 20mm axle?
« on: January 15, 2004, 11:46:11 pm »
I have been wondering what the limits are for the standard QR. When do you decide to go to a 20mm axle? Pro n' cons? I weigh 200# and ride agressive XC. Thanx

Certain QR hubs like the Shimano can be coverted to a homemade through axle.  It won't be as stiff as a real 20mm, but it will be stiffer than a regular QR.

What you need to do is go to your LBS and find a longer BMX solid axle to replace your hollow QR axle.  Bolt the axle with some nuts (bmx style) and you've got a smaller through axle system.

I just popped in to see whats happening, and to say, Hi. Hi
I've regained my 'passion', and have vowed to ride much more this year. Last year I was overcome by a move, computer building/fixing & a girl. Not this summer!
Anyway its really nice to see familiar names... Now my question, I'm curious if my fr King discotech qr can be converted to a 20mm? I shall be getting a boxxer soon and would love to save MAJOR $$ on the front wheel (hub=$100-170 + spokes + having to rebuild my current wheel).
Hope everyone's well,
take care, Joe
