Should I sell my 856?
« on: November 12, 2003, 03:13:15 am »
One of my riding friends has offered to buy my trusty 856 for $500 (US). I have another XC bike to ride & the 856 has been used as a loaner for others to ride but I still would ride it myself at least once a month sometimes more depending on the mood. I ride 2-3 times a week. It is still one of the best XC rides & my friend has demo'ed 3 or 4 other bike but likes my 856 better or the price he offered. Keep in mind that it is a very good friend that has 3 yr old twin girls and a small budgit but rides with me at least once a week now & plans to ride more when he gets his own bike I have tried to tell him to keep using the 856 but he wants to call it his own.
What are your thoughts on selling the old Pro-flex 856 if I dont need to?  8)

I thought about selling my old 856 but just couldn't do it,kept it in the family, my wife uses it,though I haven't riden it recently its there if ever I want to, its still a great bike, don't think I'll ever part with it,difficult to say what you should do,if your really attached to it you'll just end up regretting selling and as you say your mate has access to it anyway,I think your being reasonable and a good mate just loaning it out.Simon [smiley=nod.gif]

if you don't need to, then don't...down the road you will regret it. there is nothing like the W/C frames, they are unique.

your friend will still be your friend if you say no

ask OP, he still hasn't fully recovered from the sale of his 856.

You said it was your loaner bike, but didn't say if it was your spare bike.  One thing I learned a long time ago is to keep a spare.

Tell your friend to take a look at this:

it sounds like you dont really want to sell it.It also sounds like he is pretty hard on bikes. The last thing you wanrt is to see him wreck your ol 856 ...wether he owns it or not...abd i reckon he could buy one of his own even cheaper than your 500,,,,check out those posts on the razorback,,,,.....

I went through the same thing and this is how I justified the decision. You didn't say whether you have a significant other but if you sell the bike for $500 and need to buy a bike later for a mate, it could cost 2-3 times as much to replace. If you are not hurting for money, keep it and let your buddy use and maintain it. If he has to have a bike, and he is a GOOD friend, help him find a bike and explain to him that you are saving the 856. Let him know how much you would lose by selling it to him for $500 (more than $1000 from new), he should understand.

I would hang on to the bike. I main XC ride now is my epic, but I have kept my 955 as a spare.

Most of the time it is just being used as a loaner and it has in the past year introduced several people to the sport (some of which wanted to buy the bike).

It has however saved me a few times when for whatever reason my main bike was out of action. One of these days was a race day and the bike went great.

parting with "Krusty" was my biggest 'didn't need to sell it but i did" mistake

what was i thinking?  (i didn't need more room in the garage)

the thought of it all still brings a big lump to my throat - sniff!  sniff!

must have been the medication

Thanks for all the advice. I have decided to keep it as my spare and I am taking my friend to look at the ner K2 bike tonight after work.
Thanks guys for confirming what I already new. I dont think I really wanted to sell it anyway.
