Hi Dean. I think it would fit if you had the proper strut. I figured out that you have a strut from a 656 on your 855.
http://idriders.com/proflex/galleries/tmaybee/656_strut.jpg
But from the looks of the pic on the auction, I think that this shock would fit on an 855. I am not totally sure though. The pic on the Risse website for the shock for an 857 looks different than the one in the auction. The shock for an 855 has a flat base to attatch to the strut. The shock for an 857 has a conical end.

I think that shock in the auction is actually the model for an 855/955/856 but I am not sure. This is the pic off the Risse site for a shock for an 855/856

In Kiwi's gallery, he had an ODS unit from an 856 mounted on a 957 so it would make sense to me that a Risse shock from an 857 would fit on an 855 if you had the 856 strut (for the conical endshock). But the shock on auction does not appear to have a conical end...

From the looks of the pic in the auction, the shock has a flat end and I would think that that is a shock for an 855.
Confused yet?
If you want to see the differences in struts, have a look in my gallery

So, from looking at all those pictures, I think this auction is actually for a shock for an 855/856 to use with an 855 strut (or an 856 sturt and the "freedom plate adapter" from Risse). But, I am not totally sure. The guy must have had it mounted on an 857 because he is selling one of those too. Maybe you could ask the seller for the model number and check with Risse?
Ask the seller for specific measurements of the shock and I will check them against mine for you... Now, my shock is a Genesis model but I think the dimensions should be the same.
Maybe someone else on here has an Astro-5 on their 855/856 they could measure?
Hope this helps,
Trevor

Going fast is fun, but it isn't required!

I don't know if the struts are the same dimension from 855 to 857, but the Risse shock uses the freedom plate for the 857 as well. So even though the strut has a cone mount, the Risse's do not use it, you simply bolt through the base of the cone mount, through the plate adaptor and into the shock base.
This particular Astro in question has the new shaft configuration, which is very interesting (fat shaft vs old narrow shaft). I had one of the old narrow shaft versions on my 957 and I thought it was way too stiff in general, with lousy action. May as well ride a hardtail.
But I know the newer versions of this shock (with the fat shafts) are much different, so this could be a nice shock. Having said that though, I would not expect that this air shock will give you any enhanced plushness or quality travel vs. a standard NR2 or 4. But it will be a little bit lighter.

WOW trevor that is some post...I am a little confused with risse's site as well.I have emailed risse asking if the x57 shock with conical end would fit a x56 but never received a reply.I have a risse terminator fitted to my 756 with freedom plate and as redshift says it does not utilize the conical aspect at all.My opinion is that it will fit your bike wether you have a x56 or x55 strut. If you have a x56 strut you may need to spring about 20 bucks for a freedom plate....

It went for $202.87. I guess that's a good deal because it had a shock pump and was just rebuilt....
