which hydro brake?
« on: October 06, 2003, 01:19:58 pm »
ok guys, here's your chance to chime in on which hydro brake set I should use for Blue Crush. I was going to go with avid mechs but have decided to put those on the Giant carbo HT and to put hydros on the Oz. might as well go all the way!
choices:
1. Magura Marta SL (carbon levers, a plus)
2. Avid Juicy Seven
3. Hope Minis
4. Hayes HFX Mag Plus (carbon levers, a plus)
5. IRD
what do you guys think?
btw, shimanos are out of the question. I am even going to replace my XTR front der. with a SRAM der.
then, I won't have any Shimano parts on any of my bikes!!
can't wait for your opinions!!

hey Dennis,
so... another no shimano guy huh  ;) mine is exactly the same deal. it's nice to find someone else with the same attitude.
as you know i'm going for the hope mini's for my oZ. i don't have them yet, i'm thinking of waiting until their new model comes out [depending on how long that is gonna be of course]...
My black dt x 4.1 rims have just arrived and i ordered my front blue chris king iso hub yesterday. i'm going with the blue alloy nipples and black d/b dt spokes - should look sweet. ok, well i know i haven't been much help to you i just wanted to say 'yeah' to the non shimano thing and i just kinda got carried away  ;)
i look fwd to the responses too!

Carbon,
please post pics of your wheels once you get them built up. sounds sweeeeet!!
btw, what mechs (i believe that is the kiwiword for derailleurs) are you using, if not shi_mano.
OP, i just dislike not having a choice.also, I'm still pissed  about Pearl Harbor, I know, I know, I am working on getting over it.
but OP, what do you think about brakes?

hey Dennis,
just fitted sram x shifters and rear deraileur. was running sram 9 throughout [inc front deraileur] on my 957 but alas - it won't fit on my oZ [with my 46t chainring. i'm working on that though, gonna go 22,32,44 then it should be all go  ;)
certainly will post a pic of my wheels when they are built! can't wait  :)
oh yeah - the shimano thing, i guess i just wanted to prove a point years ago when it was more difficult to build up a bike without $himano on it. their monopoly did kinda stiffle competition [bit like micro$oft] and i'm all for choice. i don't know what's it's like in the states, but over here it's $himano $himano. i do drool over the new xtr but my prinicipals prevent me from shifting back...

My vote is for the Hayes HFX Mag Plus (carbon levers, a plus). The Hayes brakes work so well you never think about them again and your stopping power is vastly improved over v-'s and mech disc's.
No Shimano parts? It's your bike do what you want and dont give a crap about what anyone else is doing. If they dont like it then oh well they can ride their own bike. 8)

Hi everyone.

OK.  I am very favourable of OPEN system brakes.  they make so much more sense.  I used to like magura disk brakes - we had gustavs and louises on the rdi bikes at one stage but they just kept being difficult to look after.  Hope were overrated --- HOWEVER - I saw the brand new Hope Mono and Mibi brakes at the London Bike Trade show last week and I am really starting to change my mind.  RDI will be getting these in very soon.

I have been using formula disk brakes for the last 3 years.  Personally  have been using the gold B4 and B4 4-pot 'Team' brakes.  I have some B4 SL ultra light weight very very special brakes on the rdi shelf (not for me, for a customer, boohoo).  The B4's are very light and powerful - the only downside is that their lever designs are a bit crappy and I and one customer have broken levers.

Hayes.  you must be joking...  surely!!!

let the forum know wht you go for!

Simon, I already have the custom laser cut rotors for the bike. I got a pair for the Avid mechs I was going to use, I assume that I can use them for whatever brakes I get. but thanks.

Callum,  I was just checking out the Formula brakes website. The 4Racing XC brakes look interesting. any experience with these? the other brakes you mentioned look interesting also.

I am still thinking. Formula or Hope look like the contenders at this point.

anyone else want to offer their 3 cents?

thanks again eveyone.

Dennis,

Being somewhat familiar with your local riding conditions, and being somewhat of a confessed weight weenie, I'd have to say, go with whichever brakes are the lightest. There aren't any significant downhills on this side of the country that I know of, so ultimate braking power just ain't that big of a deal. All of the good brakes should work just fine for you, so why not go with the ones that weigh the least?

That would be Formula B4 SL's then, sorted,Simon

Er not necessarily, disc size etc, plus if you go for Hope you get the way cool wavy disc's which you could have laser cut, really you have the choice of 2 and you won't go wrong with either hope or formula, Simon [smiley=nod.gif]
